Detailed Project Description

Many consider that science is not fun, that all NASA does is investigate objects far from the earth. How can the magic of art be transmitted to science so that people understand that NASA not only needs engineers, but that from musicians to nutritionists, administrators, they can collaborate? Can Art promote Science? The NASA SONG CONTEST will be full of scientific research so that the songs that participate best represent the work of the five science divisions in NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD): Earth Science, Astrophysics, Heliophysics, Planetary Science, and Biological and Physical Sciences. It will be held in a place that encourages its magic and popularity such as Walt Disney World.

Thinking about NASA is one of the greatest things that can exist, but there are a lot of people, who believe that only those who study something related to science are the only ones who can work there, but the truth is that even the most unimaginable disciplines are necessary for the wide range of tasks that take place in this magical place. In addition, the vast majority of people think that this Government Agency is only dedicated to the study of Outer Space, and not that they have five science divisions in NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD): Earth Science, Astrophysics, Heliophysics, Planetary Science, and Biological and Physical Sciences.

More scientists are needed, more people interested in all areas of human knowledge, at the moment we have only one planet to live on, and we cannot go through this world unnoticed without generating changes.

The Discovering Science Connections challenge was chosen due to a great interest in bringing science closer to people with the desire to educate and inspire, through art.

Communication is not just an essential need, but a basic human right. Without the ability to communicate, we are essentially alone. At the same time, there are many problems in our world that could benefit from better communication, and one of the most effective and ancient ways of communicating is through songs.

Art is more than a simple hobby, it can be a vehicle that they manage to internalize in a deeper and permanent way, scientific concepts, which at first glance, are seen as impossible and that alienates future collaborators. Art is more available to everyone than science.

The art world moves borders, moves hearts, when several artists come together for a common cause, their message reaches people more than, for example, the messages given by politicians.

Although NASA has made efforts to get people closer to astronomy through art, and in general to all disciplines, even the non-scientific ones that are needed to work at NASA, the efforts are scattered in different competitions, which to most of the population go unnoticed, they do not generate a great impact for the necessary target audience, in addition, the contests in the artistic field have been aimed more than anything at children, but there is a large public, young adult and adult already with a profession, who they are ready to contribute their knowledge to NASA, but they believe that in the area they work, it is impossible. So ¿why not promote a channel of reflection linking science with art, to generate a greater impact, with a contest that impacts the world, and that everyone is pending?.

The first collaborative movement between art and science at NASA materialized with the creation of the NASA Art Program in 1962. After seeing the portrait commissioned by artist Bruce Stevenson of Alan Shepard, the first American in space, NASA Administrator James Webb asked the artist to create portraits of all NASA astronauts. He also began to imagine all that artists could do for NASA. In a March 1962 memo to Hiden T. Cox, NASA's director of public affairs, Webb expressed interest in creating a NASA art program to commemorate past and future events.

At a time when humanity was beginning to venture into space, Webb recognized the importance of capturing the emotions of exploration, such as excitement and uncertainty in a way where history could look back and fully appreciate all that the agency had succeeded.

The creations of the NASA Art Program, provide a priceless historical visual archive of humanity's heroic effort to thrive on knowledge of the cosmos narrated in a unique and exceptional way through the powerful imaginations of internationally renowned artists.

The catalyst behind NASA who left an artistic legacy was NASA Administrator James Webb. Seeing a cleverly executed portrait of Alan Shepard, Webb came up with the idea for an art show. Webb felt that NASA should actively seek artists to show a different side of the space agency, reflecting that "artists can interpret important events to provide a unique view of the significant aspects of our historical advances in space."

It is the emotional impact, interpretation, and hidden meaning of these events that are within the scope of the artist's vision. An artist can represent exactly what they think they see, feel or hear, but the image has still undergone the catalyst of their imagination and has been transformed in the process. "

In the 1990s, the program passed into the hands of Bert Ulrich, who was tasked with adopting new art forms by administrator Dan Goldin. Works included video art by Nam June Paik, an Ode to NASA by Ray Bradbury, and photographs by Annie Leibovitz. Patti LaBelle performed a song commissioned by NASA that would eventually be nominated for a Grammy. The song "Way Up There" became an elegy for the lost crew of the space shuttle Columbia. Work has been commissioned on subjects ranging from the probes of Mars to the Hubble Space Telescope, but most people do not realize these contributions, and it has been left in the hands of well-known artists, and they do not give a chance for someone not famous research and be creative.

As Lester Cooke, one of the original founders of NASA's art program, wrote, "I hope future generations will realize that we have not only scientists and engineers capable of shaping the destiny of our time, but also artists worthy of keep them company. "

Most people who like art have that amazement in observing phenomena, as scientists have, so they can join forces, so that even if people are not artists, the fact of seeing an event announced like the Grammy Awards, it already generates a great impact, and that also presentations of famous artists are made, to bring them closer to science.

But they have not focused much on the professional adult public, who perhaps as children dreamed of reaching the stars and who, due to life circumstances, could not study something related to science, such as nutritionists, painters, singers, lawyers, doctors, they believe that this is not possible, and if a more global initiative is not made, they will never be able to hear the message, and their dreams will never come out.

The NASA SONG CONTEST, intends that by means of songs, the five science divisions in NASA's Science Mission Directorate are distinguished, and that it is not only dedicated to the study of the universe, but also to aspects such as climate change, satellite data that serve to prevent natural disasters and many other things.

The Contest is designed to attract the attention of people of all ages, since if NASA holds a televised red carpet contest, with the opportunity for the public to vote for their favorites, with outstanding guests in the world of the arts, this will create a greater impact on the media globally, will serve as a tool for various sectors to join in the investigation of any of the five science divisions in NASA's Science Mission Directorate, expand the knowledge, and then develop it into a song, whose lyrics will not be what we are used to hearing normally in a singing contest, since depending on the annual theme, you can talk about the earth, water, sun, distant galaxies, which will be generated as a tool to help in the educational sectors and entrepreneurial, and will promote new science enthusiasts, discovering that it is a wider world than they believed.

The first step was to look for alternative places and alliances to develop this project, see how it could be used to generate education regarding the divisions of NASA, then see what artistic disciplines to use, to attract more attention. After an investigation, it was decided that the best alliance that could be made would be with Walt Disney World, since in previous times they have had joint Works.

This project arose due to the lack of interest and ignorance of many people about the work carried out by NASA, and that people were curious about how art can be related to science, and emotionally link them.

Through the Alliance with the Walt Disney Company, the Final Gala of the Singing Contest may be held in one of the Disney Theme Parks, to give greater publicity to the event and to reach an audience that saw science as boring, rigid, will be broadcast on television, annually.

Each country in the world will hold its own internal contest by the means it wishes to choose the candidate who will represent the country, with an unpublished song. Then an international jury will see the proposals and will choose 25 finalist countries to present their proposal at the Final Gala.

The theme of each year will vary, rotating the five science divisions in NASA's Science Mission Directorate, the first year will be dedicated to Earth Sciences, the following to Astrophysics, then to Heliophysics, then to Planetary Sciences and finally to Biological and Physical Sciences, then the sixth year to start again with Earth Sciences and so on.

For now, the contest will not have an age limit, from a child to an older adult, the idea that is intergenerational can participate, and see how beautiful it is that several generations come together to achieve a great musical proposal.

They will perform a staging with an original song, accompanied by any other artistic manifestation, with a limit of 10 people on stage.

The winner of the Final Gala will be chosen 50 percent from the international jury and 50 percent from the public vote.

Disney is a dream factory, who does not identify with Mickey Mouse? It is something we see on television, in supermarkets, an impressive merchandising, NASA has made efforts to promote art and to popularize science, but it does not reach as many places in the world as the Walt Disney Company.

Disney and NASA have had a beautiful relationship in various projects, Walt Disney saw in the union of space exploration and art, a powerful combinat

Disney personally hosted the first television show, "Man in Space," which aired on ABC on March 9, 1955. The goal, he said, was to combine "the tools of our trade with the knowledge of scientists to create an image, objective of the last plans for the new adventure of man". He later called the program "fact-based science." The show represented something new in its approach to science. But it was also based on Disney's trademark animation techniques.

It has also been reflected in the theme parks they have several space-related attractions, they have G Force simulations of traveling in a space shuttle, the Mission: SPACE attractions are fun and adventurous. The Soarin 'experience and Rocket to the Red Planet, as well as many other learning exhibits located within Future World, with well-founded scientific work, even certified astronauts work on Disney staff to ensure that rides, rides and voices off are accurate representations of real-life NASA experiences. NASA engineers and staff members regularly consult with Disney engineers and experts to evaluate and expand their simulation technology and create more effective training programs.

Global warming, water scarcity, forest fires, world famine, air quality, we need people to be interested in these issues to get involved, just by promoting the communication of solutions, each person from their profession can contribute greatly.

Artists are inspiring to dream of reaching beyond planet earth, such is the case of Jules Verne, both his novel "From the Earth to the Moon" (1865), and "Around the Moon" (1870), were precursors for this unusual fact since both Verne's works have great similarities and details with the arrival of Apollo 11 to the natural satellite.

Art and science involve creativity, perhaps both obey similar neural processes.

Art unites people from all over the world, it is not necessary to speak the same language to understand the feeling it transmits.

NASA RESOURCES

We proceeded to investigate how art has been present at NASA, since its inception with the first collaboration between art and science that materialized with the creation of the NASA Art Program in 1962, then the catalyst behind NASA administrator who left an artistic legacy was NASA administrator James Webb, in the 1990s, the program passed into the hands of Bert Ulrich, who was assigned the task of adopting new art forms by administrator Dan Goldin.

Nowadays painters and musicians have also demonstrated their love for science and because it reaches more people through art, such is the case of the musician Vangelis, he has said that he understands the world through music and that music shapes the universe, in appreciation for the work he has done supporting and promoting science over the years, NASA awarded Vangelis a public service medal and named an asteroid after him.

For her part, Nicole Stott: Retired astronaut, artist, alumnus, member emeritus of the Board of Directors and namesake of the Nicole Stott Art Gallery in Embry-Riddle, since retiring from NASA in 2015, Stott has continued to tap into her love by science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) to improve life on Earth. For example, she has been a champion of the Spacesuit Art Project, which places artwork of children in cancer treatment in spacesuits that convey messages of hope, courage and unity.

Also thanks to the investigation of NASA sources, it was discovered that there are free access images, so that painting enthusiasts, have in them inspiration to make great works.

NASA has art programs, to promote that people see science as something friendlier, that they know what NASA does, but most are aimed at children and are about painting, but they have not been much oriented to the professional adult public, which perhaps as children they dreamed of reaching for the stars and that, due to life circumstances, they could not study something related to science, such as nutritionists, painters, singers, lawyers, doctors, and they believe that this is not possible. If a more global initiative is not made, they will never be able to hear the message, and they will never be able to bring out their dreams, an artistic project that generates impact is needed.

In the resources provided by NASA, it has also been indicated that Disney and NASA have had a beautiful relationship in several projects, Walt Disney saw in the union of space exploration and art, a powerful combination.

Disney personally hosted the first television show, "Man in Space," which aired on ABC on March 9, 1955. It has also been reflected in the theme parks that have several space-related attractions.

Hackathon Journey

I am a Lawyer, I have a Master's degree in Communication and Marketing, I have studied singing, piano, theater, painting, and I love astronomy, I am almost like a platypus, many people tell me, they cannot understand why I have studied such diverse things, since They have no connection, I give you the example of Leonardo da Vinci, which he achieved by connecting art with science.

For reasons of life, I did not study something related to science, until a few years ago, I thought that the area of science as it is so amazing, at the study and work level, was saturated, but to a Conference I went on astronomy, I realized that no, and the question came to me: ¿what is happening, is it that they see boring science? Or do you think it is something unattainable from the disciplines in which they are developed?

My experience in the NASA Space App Challenge has been interesting, I did not know about the project until a few days ago, a very good initiative by NASA.

I have seen projects from previous years and some current ones, of course what science is is fundamental for these kinds of challenges, but they have to give more emphasis to the area of communication, since it is not possible for the message to reach the appropriate way to humanity, many people will continue to emerge who question that the resources allocated by governments to space programs are better used to alleviate hunger, reactivate the economy, fix the educational system and if it is not communicated in an assertive way indicating that thanks to the programs special advances have been made that have come to greatly benefit humanity, such as magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scans, global positioning systems, to anticipate natural disasters, the task is not being fulfilled, and people will not give NASA the great value it deserves.

The problems encountered developed limitations, with the people I talked to to create a project, they were going to be based on scientific knowledge, but I wanted to generate a change in perception by directing attention to the area of communication and marketing, so I decided to venture out and do the project individually.

Also in terms of the time to collect the information, it was little to create the project, and in my case as I did it individually, the workload was much higher, so I worked many hours to get the result.

The first collaboration between art and science that NASA had materialized with the creation of the NASA Art Program in 1962, it has evolved, but it has become a bit stagnant, it has to find novel ways that attract attention of possible collaborators in the different disciplines of NASA.

You need to have an engaging event that piques people's interest, as well as encourage emotional participation.
