AirSecure: Improving Urban Security

High-Level Project Summary

AirSecure is a type of solar-powered drone technology which can be used to surveil and patrol around areas of high criminal activity with use of Artificial Intelligence. The purpose of this project is to reduce the crime rate in urban areas thus contributing to urban development in terms of safety and security. Since drones fly frequently to patrol, it requires more power. Each area will have a certain number of solar-powered drone hubs which these drones will travel to and get charged. The surveillance will be done throughout the journey from one hub to another. Drones will use Artificial Intelligence to navigate and identify human activity and transmit video to management system.

Detailed Project Description

AirSecure drones will do surveillance in a high crime rate areas to reduce criminal activity. Unlike typical drones, AirSecure drones function with advanced technology with the help of Artificial Intelligence. AirSecure drones will travel from one drone hub to another and do surveillance throughout the journey. The live video will be transmitted to management system through Wi-Fi which should not be a problem in Urban Cities. Human activities will be notified and Managers can act accordingly. Since flying drones consumes a lot of energy, these drone hubs also function as a charging station which is powered by solar panels.


The Artificial Intelligence in AirSecure functions in the navigation mechanism. There are two technologies that will help the drone navigation: Path Optimizer & Constraint Optimizer.


This Path Optimizer has been developed to cater the project by finding the shortest patrol route around the areas of high criminal activity. Path Optimizer finds the shortest path by implementing Hamiltonian Cycle. This will reduce the fuel wastage of the drones thus providing more air time to patrol around.  


This Mutation-based Constraint Optimizer has been developed to cater the project by finding the optimal route to avoid constraints along the travel around the areas of high criminal activity. Mutation-based Constraint Optimizer does by implementing Genetic Algorithm which mainly focuses on mutation of chromosomes. This will avoid drones crashing into any constraints along the path thus adding safety.  


AirSecure provides safety and security to urban areas even during the night where most of the crimes take place. We hope this project can be implemented to make urban living a safer option.


Microsoft Visual Studio has been used to develop both Path Optimizer & Constraint Optimizer which is in C++ programming language. Microsoft PowerPoint has been used to make the presentation demo.

Seeing how poverty leads to crime inspired me to think of ways to make urban living a safer one.

Hackathon Journey

I learned a lot from participation in this Hackathon especially in terms of programming and was able to interact with so many talented people. We wanted to do something new with the drone technology and general view towards safety of human lives inspired us to choose this challenge. Brainstorming, Designing, Programming, Writing has been the approach.
