High-Level Project Summary

People need to be prepared to make the decisions that can save their lives. Nature is presenting us with challenges that affect people's quality of life. Regarding United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development we need to know what places are suitable to ensure access for all to adequate, safe, and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade low-income communities. We must take advantage of space technology combined with ground-based and airborne measurement technologies to guarantee and adequate information to ensure first-hand and adequate information to make life saving decisions.

Detailed Project Description

Proposed solution aids on UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly at Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. We are making emphasis at low-income settlements at rural or semi-urban areas as for instance around Popocatepetl Volcano, at Sierra Norte de Puebla, or at settlements near industrial areas.

We are committed to present a solution to “DRONES AND SATELLITES FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT” challenge, taking into consideration portions of “IDENTIFYING RISK WITH SCIENCE + COMMUNITIES”, “SPACE FOR CHANGE”, and “EXPLORATION V2.0 WARNING: THINGS ARE HEATING UP!”.

Regarding “DRONES AND SATELLITES FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT” challenge, we are making effective use of satellite imagery for long term, historical information construction, and stablishing context, we are also making clever use of drones' data collection from risk and disaster zones, and for delivery of survival materials and technology relevant for people protection. Moreover, we are defining an extensible and flexible platform capable of growing and repurposing as needed by the settlements and by the pertinent authorities regarding People Protection.

All the proposed technology is currently available on the market or can be developed with current technological resources.

Regarding “IDENTIFYING RISK WITH SCIENCE + COMMUNITIES” challenge, this platform is capable of integrate information from satellite imagery in order tu detect risk zones around specific geographical landmarks and manage this information in conjunction with information provided by the people (as a Croud-source) that can be researched by drones and documented by our own geographic corpus of information in order to (as possible) prevent and mitigate risk related to landslides, flushes, fires, pollution and other phenomena.

Regarding “SPACE FOR CHANGE” challenge, we are focusing on low-income settlements to make up for the disadvantages that these communities may have compared to other more developed or better served areas. However, this platform is capable of take care of all kinds of settlements.

Regarding “EXPLORATION V2.0 WARNING: THINGS ARE HEATING UP!” challenge, this platform will create a geographical information corpus that will be a reference to analyze and take decisions on the base of settlements evolution and the relation of the environment (as water availability, and heat) on the long run.

Low-income settlements have fewer opportunities to cope with the disasters and risks caused by nature and man-made that can affect their quality of life or their very life. This proposal is aimed to provide better opportunities and tools for people safety, but it has not to be limited only to low-income settlements.

Human lives are at stake when it comes to dealing with natural or man-made catastrophes or disasters. This is the opportunity to provide equal conditions for all people disregarding the incoming level of the settlements and will provide the base for planning of the urban development.

Hackathon Journey

We are delighted to be part of this Challenge, and even better as it is a local and global event. This challenge is giving us new horizons about the scientific and technical fields on which we can work and enjoy.
