High-Level Project Summary

Our project is a compilation of public resources necessary for construction of sustainable housing. The importance stems from an accessible way to parse these resources. Target 11.1 of the challenge seeks to create affordable housing for all, and to do so, we need to see what resources are available in a developing area. These resources may be different than just water coverage or power lines - we may need to know what amenities are around, where the closest grocery store is, or what public transport in an area looks like. We also wanted to approach the problem from an engineer's perspective. What sort of information do Civil Engineers need to build? Soil information was a large factor.

Detailed Project Description

Overall, we designed a software that compiles open information regarding the data of public transport, soil structure, solar gradient, zoning, and other key factors necessary to look at when designing and placing a building. What we found when we were investigating is that there is no tool made to conglomerate this data into an accessible chunk. Our next step was going to be implementing key features for looking at a building from latitude and longitude and importing Revit review files to assure a building could sustainably stand on the soil. Many of the resources we used were globalized, so while our program reads maps of the Cleveland area, the ability to expand is feasible with a larger timescale and more intensive infrastructure.

Hackathon Journey

Lots of data in a short amount of time. A constant progression with fast research.

"Like a centrifuge starting at 9" - DM

"I ended up using a lot different knowledge than I expected to (And I enjoyed it)." - Garrett

"Fast paced research with not a lot of time to parse it out." - Daniel

"I got really lucky with my team- we seemed to mesh, and I felt like everyone managed to use their strengths. Definitely short on time, and I wish we could have been in-person, but overall an awesome experience." - Jill
