Water supply using sunlight

High-Level Project Summary

Solar powered artesian wells with an automated system using satellite imagery and solar radiation data, plus drone imagery for mapping and monitoring the installation site, for slums and suburbs.These wells will solve the problem of lack of access to drinking water in poor communities around the world, and will be a durable and sustainable installation through the use of photovoltaic energy. And they will promote inclusion by bringing this basic water resource to people in need, while also developing more sustainable urban plans.

Detailed Project Description

The system works by mapping and monitoring the area to be drilled with images captured by drone. Later, these records would be sent to a professional who would be responsible for analyzing and conducting a geophysical study of the site. Then, after the research about the origin of the drilling is concluded, an artesian or semi-artesian well system would be installed, connected to a pump. This pump would be supplied with solar energy, transmitted by photovoltaic panels installed next to the system.

This system would be responsible for extracting water from the groundwater in order to supply local communities with potable water in a sustainable way, using clean energy. The main benefit is to make this basic resource, water, accessible to those who need it. Our differential would be to have less human action in this process, software and drones would be the main actors after the installation of the system.

Space Agency Data

We would use EARTHDATA, for the analysis of the average solar irradiance at the mapped site and better sizing of the PV system. NSRDB will assist EARTHDATA for the solar irradiance data and POPGRID.

Hackathon Journey

Our experience with this event was excellent, we were able to learn several things from the individual experience of each member, we were able to observe other ways to solve a problem and, best of all, to deal with the various changes. What was most satisfying for me was the fact that everyone got together for a good, everyone, within their own ability, helped in some way, and in my opinion this was more important than anything.

Together with the experience based on the reality lived and witnessed before all the members, we started a thorough research on solar panel mechanisms for the development of our idea. We would use EARTHDATA to analyze the average solar irradiance at the mapped location and better dimension the photovoltaic system. NSRDB will serve as an aid to EARTHDATA for the solar irradiance data and the 

POPGRID together with a geophysical study.

Together with a field survey with the actual experience of the problems experienced in the communities, as a basis for defining the final solution
