Plantsphere!

High-Level Project Summary

As humans enlarge space exploration farther from Earth, the ability to grow plants is a solution to the challenge of long-duration missions into space. So we thought about designing this basic but useful machine provides a suitable habitat to grow plants and vegetables. It has a screen to show information , purple light to speed up the growth and so much more. With this machine, we can provide food for example, potatoes, tomatoes, beans and more. This machine makes circulations and its good for resources because it makes savings from energy. If we briefly summarize this, our project has a simple ecosystem including an impressive design, easy to use, portable, and thrifty machine.

Detailed Project Description

How We Addressed This Challenge:

As we all know it is a hard, expensive and effort demanding job to send and stock astronauts needed food in space and also during a 2 or 3-year mission to space, the vitamins and quality of packaged food would decrease over time so it is an important mission to solve this problem with an easy, useful, and cheaper solution with a design which lets astronauts grow their own healty and organic food with less effort.

We are aware of the fact that it is time consuming to grow plants so we tried to speed up the process as much as we could. And also nowadays colonizing in Mars, and space travelling are getting more and more attention and becoming more important.

Plus, according to NASA data, there are psychological benefits for astronauts, rooted in the enjoyment of eating and caring for plants.

So we decided to choose this topic to contribute to this important problem.

How We Develop This Project:

It is already possible to grow plants in space but we can not provide enough food for all the astronauts. We wanted to find a solution to this problem and also increase the productivity, ease and biodiversity of growing crops in space.

First of all, we used our knowledge that we learned at school to create the circulations of planting.

Secondly, we got help from our biology and psyhics teachers to create a usable ecosystem. After that, we simply designed the machine digitally.

We draw several prototypes from digital apps and added them on our powerpoint demo.

Finally, we finished our demo writings and carried our draft writings to our demo.

Space Agency Data

How We Used The Space Agency Database:

We found some resources from 'Have Seeds Will Travel' resources page and NASA's own database about this subject.

And we used the resources for getting an idea for our project and created new sentences for our summary and powerpoint slide.

Hackathon Journey

This hackathon was very valuable for us, we learned a lot and had a lot of fun at the same time. We worked hard and got tired in this hackathon, but it was not such a boring tiredness, on the contrary, it was a sweet tiredness. We later realized that it was not the work that bore people, but the way of working. So we were tired but we had fun. We may have had difficulties, but we overcame, for example, One of our teammates had a corona virus, but he continued to work with us even when he was tired and sick, and he was with us. In our other problems, the mentor team helped. We used the resources provided by NASA and started to do our project by racing against time. We prepared each of the drawings and diagrams. While preparing these, we used images from Google and other sources, and we did not forget to mention these sources. Finally, we completed our project and started making the promotional animation, demo and our site. There was a domain problem we experienced while making our site, but we overcame the problem with the help of mentors and finally completed our project. We entered our project on the site. So this was our hacathon adventure and it was an adventure that we never wanted to end. We have learned how funny teamwork is, that science and technology have an eternal life, and that anyone who has no trace in space has no words in the world. So a big thank you to the entire Space Apps team and NASA. We had good memories thanks to you.
