High-Level Project Summary

For our project we base on the need to devise a production system and viable food management on a possible journey to Mars and long-term exploration missions that maintain the health and performance of astronauts. We take as a main idea to optimize current cultivation growth systems, plan a hybrid between Advanced Plant Habitat (APH) and Veggie in a fishbowl design; Based on both technical data and in the potential of psychological benefits for astronauts based on the action of caring for plants and eating fresh food. By covering these two problems in our project we take for granted the importance of it.

Hackathon Journey

Carrying out this project helped us to put our imagination into play regarding the vegetables that could be grown in other conditions, we learned a little more about the effect of radiation on them or how excess CO2 affects the growth of the plants, thinking about the design of the modules or another form of crops among our group as students was a challenge but it helped us to put into practice what we learned in school.


The main reason why we chose this challenge was because we were struck by how we were going to find a form of cultivation in space, knowing what life is like and the nutritional conditions they have, how their bodies process food since it varies in everything. meaning taking into account the effect of gravity as the fundamental axis of the problem. Another reason was that we were excited to be part of the change and human evolution that this type of challenge brings us.
