Elerians Greenhouse

High-Level Project Summary

This is our design in space apps challenge 2021. Our purpose is to make extra nutrition to around 4-6 astronauts. We planned to continue this plantation until Spacecraft will arrive to earth. Lunar or Mars are the destinations. Especially our plants can use to travel to Mars. It spend at least five months and again to earth the time duration will double. In Greenhouse we can supply many nutrition that Astronauts want.

Detailed Project Description

Elerian Greenhouse

This design is a metal cylindrical shape structured greenhouse attached to spacecraft. The length of this part is 10 meters, height is 5 meters and width is 5 meters. This greenhouse can use in Lunar or Mars because we designed fully foldable landing gears to spot in grounds there.

We used curved solar panels on top of this to generate its own electricity power. Mainly the door is foldable like a private jet. Near the door it sounds like operating room & storage room, we designed to make a cupboard system to store all equipment that we use in this greenhouse. Like seeds, fertilizers, harvesting gadgets.

In greenhouse we decided to plant sunflower shoots in cupboards, that cupboards are designed to make by fiberglass and also transparent. Then we can see how they growing nicely.

In middle of the greenhouse we designed a mesh like separating cylinder to two parts. It because to extend the growing area of the blue pea plant that we decided to grow in this mesh.

In the purple area is the main planting area, we decided to grow Roma tomato plants.

You can see the yellow tubes, those are the main lights system designed by LED. It also in cupboards which we use to grow sunflower shoots. It has…

Blue color tubes shows the watering system. It also located in cupboards and the bottom of the mesh.

Plants

Roma tomato

It gives 35 calories 43% fat, 38% carbs, 19% protein  vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin K.

> 400g per day for a one person - https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/healthy-diet (vegetables & Fruits), so we need 400*6= 2400g(2.4kg) per day.

One raw

10 meters long

gap per plant – 1.5Ft

then we can seed 22plants.

then all 44 tomato plants.

Blue pea

>it gives calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, manganese and sodium & full of antioxidants.

Sunflower shoots

>It gives Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C , Vitamin K, vitamin B complex ,vitamin D Iron and Manganese. 160 calories.

Soil

Tomato- Organic compost & Nitrogen(N),Phosphorus(P), Potassium(K) fertilizers.

Sunflower shoots- Hydroponic.

Blue pea- Organic compost.

> We are using Organic compost because some artificial compost & fertilizers are harm for the health of the Human.

 > We are using the waste items for make the compost. The waste means the human left overs. We are not using soil for plant the sunflower shoots. We are using the hydroponic way to plant them.

sensors

·      Temperature sensor / Temperature controler (timer)

 Place:-

> Placing this instrument in the top of the greenhouse.

> 27 Celsius temperature is the best for these plants.

> Cold will ruin the flavoure of tomato.

> temperature will increase when Carbon dioxide goes high, then from this sensor we can identify that situation and we program to decrease the supply of Carbon dioxide when temperature increases.

·      Air Filter

Place:-

> This instrument placing in near the door because if this goes in any error it near to handle from Astronauts.

need:-

> tomato- 1200ppm (CO2) this concentration is the average that all three plants can aspire.

> Normal tree needs 1500ppm maximum when a plant matured. so do not worry to put all exhaling air into green house. We would absorb more CO2 from the green house outside.

> for every 150 grams of plant tissue grown, 32 grams of oxygen are released. Then supplying oxygen for Astronauts, we can guarantee that from this greenhouse unit.

·        Water controller (Timer) fertilizer controller

Place:-

> 3 water controllers use for plants separately.

> placing near the water store.

> Sunflower shoots - spray bit water daily (50ml) for one tray.

> tomato needs more water supply than other.

> Blue pea needs water supply once per day.

> Spray water when soil moisture sensor detects if it has low water.

·   Soil moisture sensor

Place:-

> Buried in soil.

> Soil water is an important carrier of soluble food nutrients for plant growth.

> We place this sensor with the electrodes in soil to measure the water level in soil, then we can use this data and program to watering plants.

·   Soil temperature sensor

place:-

> buried in soil.

>this sensor is also located in soil moisture sensor.

·     PAR Sensor (Photosynthetically Active Radiation)

Place :-

>Buried in soil.

> This sensor is also located in soil moisture sensor.

Hackathon Journey

Actually it was super, because I learned lot of things like designing...etc. our team like to learn and do experiments about space. therefore we chosen this challenge. I'm the designer.. we have lot of setbacks and challenges but we solved by searching google. yes ,I like to thank to my team because they helps to design this green house..
