Hybrid Space Herb

High-Level Project Summary

Our plans are to develop a deployable crop production system which can support the nutritional requirements of a crew on a mission to Mars and back to Earth. This system will consist of herbs growth chambers that can be stowed in a volume less than 15% of their deployed volume, while still providing the light output and root zone capabilities necessary to support high plant productivity rates. The system will be significantly reduced logistically and operationally compared to other herbs growth systems, and is of a modular design to allow flexibility in terms of transport options and placement in a habitat structure.

Detailed Project Description

We have tried to design a deployable crop production system capable of supporting the nutritional requirements of a crew of 4-6 on a transit mission to Mars and back to Earth.

The existence of a space farm would aid the creation of a sustainable environment, as herbs can be used to recycle wastewater, generate oxygen, continuously purify the air, and recycle feces on the space station or spaceship.

We have made a in-depth research about herbs which contain vitamins B, C and K.

We think that the creation of the project is realistic as similar projects have already been developed. The on-ground research is essential and will lead to correctly creating such crop production system. Calculating the pressure, the oxygen level, the soil and such factor will help us to develop our system and fulfill all of the needed requirements for our herbs to grow and be re-producing.

Hackathon Journey

The hackathon is an exciting event for our EnergyGiga team. We have taken through different researches to find the most appropriate possibility “have seeds will travel into space”. During the entire project we shared ideas with each other and received more and more information how to improve our project. All teammates have learned more about the transportation of seeds in space and the vitamins that they contain by themselves. We hope our project will be a useful way of development.

We were inspired by the idea of transporting plants into space, because we believe that plants are extremely important for astronauts as a breeding ground for vitamins. Our team divided the tasks. Everyone worked for a certain amount of time and then we reviewed and adjusted the project. The information is carefully selected from the Internet and books. We chose herbs because they are not only a source of vitamins but also healing.

Our team would like to thank to NASA for giving us this opportunity to participate in this awesome space & science hackathon. NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge succeed to provoke us to think out of the box, so this helps us to develop our skills. This challenge inspired us to search information and to learn many new things about the Space and the unique herbs and foods we have the opportunity to grow.
