FUNGUS SPACE CROPPING!

High-Level Project Summary

The project aims to help the problem of food scarcity while in space by creating a system that can grow various types of mushrooms, but specificaly, oyster mushrooms that have been proven to be very reliable at growing in different environmental conditions and having quiality nutrients, they have all essential aminoacids. The system is designed to be relatively small and affordable, it is also modular and can be adapted to the crew size for more production, and it can adapt form to better fit the given space of the ship/station.It also can be carried to another surfaces such as the moon or mars if the essential resources are provided (water and oxygen), fructifications can resist vacuum.

Detailed Project Description

What it does?

It adapts a space to have the right conditions for growing oyster mushrooms, and give food every certain amount of time to the crew members.

How does it work?

It creates the right climatic environment for oyster mushrooms to grow, by controlling humidity, temperature, light and oxygen/co2 levels.

What benefits does it have?

It is modular, cheap, adaptable, it can be stored and grow can be delayed, so a configuration of growing units can be made to have food all of the duration of the travel.

What do you hope to achieve?

I hope to be selected to eventually furhter the development of the system and be ready for ARTEMIS program or future space programs.

What tools, coding languages, hardware, or software did you use to develop your project?

In this case, the develop was solely documental research and design based on the research, the hardware can be built in very near future in order to have a working prototype.

Space Agency Data

Information was obtained from different sources, but some information from NASA's and ESA's websites and studies were used.

Hackathon Journey

I am more experienced in remote sensing, so i thought a challenge related to that could be better for me, but as soon as ir read about the ''have seeds will travel'' challenge, i wanted to join it. Since i'm a biologist, the idea of designing a system for cropping in space was very interesting and attractive.

My experience was not very good for the most part, because for the second time my team abandoned me by ghosting me the entire event, they did not work on this project nor in another one. But at the same time, for the second instance i decided to carry the whole thing myself, i'm aware of the limitations of my working at half of the event, and i know there are more developed projects around there, but anyways, people say ''the objective of a marathon is not getting the first place, is finishing it''

My approach for this project is a biological one.

My main limitation was team size (it was just me) and more time to formalize all the information collected into a document that serves as ''final project''
