Shiitake box and aeroponic closet for several plants

High-Level Project Summary

We developed a solution which allows us to grow food on long distance cosmic trips. We decided to desing a box with Shiitake mushrooms and a closet with aeroponics grow of kumato tomatoes, common chickpea, and watercress. We choose thoose kind of plants mainly because of their properities, compositions, and even their abiliti to improve mental health of the crew(for example tomatoes ) crew are longing to food from earth Our solution solves the challange because it's appropriate for the challange requirements. We desinged a working (at least we think it's working) food production center which can provide not obvious kinds of products like Shiitake mushrooms.

Detailed Project Description

The main idea of the project is to develop an working food production system and we created a box in which we are going to grow Shiitake mushrooms and we also created an aeroponic closet which allows us to grow Kumato tomatoes, Watercress and common chickpea.

We were hoping to achieve a system which can supply food for 4 crew members on their cosmic trips

Our solution is important because it can change lives of humans not only in space, but here down on earth.

For example, we can grow plants in close habitat in our flats or if we enlarge our solution in closed environments for example on deserts

We used a lot od www.diagrams.net to create block charts and Solidworks to create CAD models.

We worked on Google Drive which was used to synchronize a work of whole team

Space Agency Data

We were inspired by the existing system called Veggie developed by Nasa and also by Advanced Plant Habitat also provided by NASA.

We studied some solutions explained there, but we also wanted to take a different approach so we focused on non obvious plants,

The Growing Plants in Space article was also very helpful

We also studied food production website provides by CSA

Hackathon Journey

During the whole event we developed great communications skills among us.

We were inspired by the need to provide the crew members mental and psychical health and the best way to do so is to make them look after a plants.

The plants allows the crew members to feel closer to earth and to actually feel the taste of food down here

We would like to thanks to Pawel Milan and Radoslaw Kruk from KPU Krosno for the guidance and advices, and also for being there for us.

We would like to thanks to Lukasz and Marcin for organization and for a chance to be here

If we had more time, we would be able to create waste recycling system (currently functioning only partially) possible future mushrooms crops.
