Seeds from Latin America to space

High-Level Project Summary

There are unique Latin American plants, easy to grow and with surprising grain yields that facilitate long-term missions, since by containing a composition rich in functional ingredients, they would serve as a complementary diet.in addition to being able to be stored for a long time for consumption, since they are seeds.By using hydroponic cultivation, optimal development in microgravity environments will be guaranteed. The biomass recovery system will generate fresh food in space, by including all living beings (bacteria, plants and humans) within a closed artificial ecosystem, sustainability will occur, since there is a symbiosis.Generating oxygen, water and food necessary for the crew.

Detailed Project Description

As amaranth, chia and quinoa are highly productive foods, they can become part of the astronauts' diet, as they are excellent foods that provide the necessary nutrients for a long-term mission, through a capsule called CHI (custom help implantation) and the hydroponic method we can grow plants in a microgravity environment, by implementing a closed ecosystem through the symbiosis between living beings, we can take advantage of all the matter to generate a sustainable ecosystem, the greatest benefit is to be able to have a food of high nutritional grade in a space mission, taking advantage of all the resources, in the future to be able to achieve missions within deep space, we use all the data available from NASA regarding the veggie project, the MELiSSA project in addition to research by some universities in Mexico, and tools such as solid edge, premiere, and canva software

Space Agency Data

The vegetable production system, known as Veggie helped us to understand the growth of plants in a microgravity environment, the data provided by the MELiSSA project helps us understand the symbiosis within the spacecraft, the purpose of implementing these seeds to space is to be able to add fresh food to the astronauts' diet, it was very important for us to understand the importance of all the data to contemplate the volume of the capsule for design issues, as well as to know the special characteristics of the plants and what changes can suffer in microgravity in order to adapt the growth and irrigation system to the spacecraft for food production.

Hackathon Journey

Our experience with Space Apps was a challenge, solving a problem in less than 24 hours has been fantastic, this is something in which we have never participated, especially in a subject that we did not know about data and concepts that we had never handled. We learned to work as a team, just as we learned too many concepts about life in microgravity and in outer space, they are quite new concepts for us. but it was amazing, our approach was to seek the well-being of the astronauts, as well as looking for seeds that meet all the requirements of the harsh conditions, without using as much weight or volume inside the spacecraft. As a team we were able to solve several problems, however due to the very limited time, our project is theoretical, as we can only develop prototypes. we would like to thank you for the opportunity to be part of the nasa space app challenge 2021, we know that preparation over time is necessary to be successful in space, as well as to develop new ideas and technologies that change the world and space travel, It was a unique experience.
