Detailed Project Description
The growth of plants in outer space has aroused much scientific interest. [1] In the late 20th and 21st centuries, plants were often taken into space in low Earth orbit to grow in a controlled but uncontrolled environment, sometimes called space gardens. In the context of human space flight, it can be consumed as food and/or provide a refreshing atmosphere. [2] Plants can absorb carbon dioxide from the air to produce beneficial oxygen, and can help control the humidity of the cabin. Plants growing in space may provide psychological benefit to human spaceflight crews. Plants are usually part of studies or technical development for developing space gardens or conducting scientific experiments.
