Space for plants

High-Level Project Summary

We decided to face this challenge because even knowing that this project would not be easy at all, everyone was interested in trying to figure out a way to have an autonomous cultivation in space, because being able to produce food independently in space would lead to revolutions, it is an excellent help. to space discovery by making space flights much more efficient.The best way we have thought of to tackle this project is to work as a team, it will not be a project done by engineers but teamwork has made it a great experience and we think we have come to an acceptable conclusion.

Detailed Project Description

This project is based on the deployment of a system capable of providing the right nourishment.It is formed by a cylinder which will be integrated into the spacecraft wall, inside this cylinder will be located a rail that will allow the removal of the module.The module will be composed of a lithium plate that will protect plants from galactics cosmic radiation (GCR) and solar particles events (SPE). Inside of the plate and the small doors there are mirrors that will help plants with the chlorophyll synthesis, avoiding direct contact with light. The seeds of the plants will grow inside a cotton swab soaked in water and under artificial lights this will allow the plants to grow and arrive on the planet ready for the productive period.After the module will be deployed on the ground of the planet it will only be necessary to arrange a perforated rubber connected to the urine collection well that will have been retracted to reuse the waste water.The plants will be protected from any storms by simply closing the small doors or placing the module inside the cylinder in the wall of the spacecraft

The data resources we used were mainly those provided to us by nasa, but we also inquired in astrobotany books, pdf documents of experiments regarding space cultivation and comments made by astronauts regarding the possibility of having fresh food and how this can incentivize space travel.

Hackathon Journey

Our experience was very pleasant, we had no problems finding things, and we learned a lot from the information we shared. Our team chose this challenge because we are fascinated by the various different behaviors during weightlessness. We did not have any particular problems, we overcame everything that came in front of us. I would like to thank the team that in these two days has collaborated on the project with seriousness and professionalism.

From the data that were provided to us, we analyzed the various cultivation experiments in the PH-01 or plants habitat 1 machinery, reading the data of these experiments we took the most useful information and tried to understand what were any problems that could be solved, thanks to this information. we were able to design our project to the best of our abilities.
