INTERSTELLAR GREENHOUSE (INGREEN)

High-Level Project Summary

Our project represents the improvement of food on the planet, self-sustaining and with low consumption of resources, equipment that can be installed on any surface of self-generation of electricity can be deployed even in the worst conditions, short cycles allow to generate food in just 24 hours, food that provides users with an excellent amount of nutrients and vitamins, this equipment can be implemented in shelters, or places where advanced nutritional nutrition is required, this project is focused on long-distance trips, easy to assemble and without generating waste of garbage. , our prototype is absolutely technological and self-sustaining, the future in food.

Detailed Project Description

INGRREN is a greenhouse that contains 12 interior trays of 45x30, this mechanism is capable of producing food (sprouts) with a large amount of nutrients and vitamins that are essential to keep the crew healthy, one of its most outstanding qualities is the germination cycle that goes from two hours to 4 days maximum.  

The prototype created is intended to be a viable solution both for the world food problem and for space exploration trips. This equipment is ideal because the only resource necessary for its operation is water, it is simple to assemble, intuitive, light, resistant, there are no parts that can break or get lost and has two self-supporting energy systems (solar panels and internal hydrogen plant). 

Its use is very easy because after assembling and turning on the digital systems on the screen on the right side, it is only necessary to burst the hydric compound inside the seed bags and humidify for 1 hour, then spread the contents evenly over the entire surface of the prepared tray and finally cover it with the protective cloth. It is important to program the automatic mode of the mechanism in order to maintain the greenhouse with the temperature and gases necessary for the proper growth of the sprouts, once the germination process is completed, a sound alert and a notification via RF will be emitted. 

Its cleanliness is null since it does not produce organic waste due to the fact that only the rooting cloths are used.  

It is possible for the user to obtain exact data from inside the prototype, this data can be sent via email, WhatsApp automatic message, or phone call, in addition, the equipment can be controlled remotely with a cell phone and with an Android application (people connection project) in order to monitor in real time important aspects for scientific studies on the germination of seeds such as temperature, times, gases and water control. Another function that we would like to add in the future for INGREEN is the control via security cameras in order to automatically generate a message in case of problems in the development of the sprouts. 

One of the problems that arose during the development of the project was the ability to obtain energy, if the equipment is on earth there would be no problem but on the moon there is no way to obtain sunlight so an alternative that we believed viable and with which we are working was the HOX system, this is an electrolysis plant where in a series of 4 independent chambers we have 4 different functions; the first electrolysis chamber produces hydrogen for a liquid heater, in the second chamber the liquid heater produces steam that is transferred sequentially decreasing to obtain a considerable pressure, the third chamber contains the electronic systems and battery recharging and the last chamber corresponds to the gas outlet that is directed to a Stirling engine that injects the steam to generate movement to a flywheel, In this a system of belts that are distributed through 5 dynamos of 5v each connected in series to deliver 25 volts and very low amperage, this will be increased with transformers and thieves of joules because in this way we can get the amperage and voltage needed to recharge batteries, spare or to keep the system running. The HOX system works only with water so it is necessary to add some sachets in the HOX kit to obtain electro conductivity.

The steam water is recovered to be reused, and we are looking for solutions to design a filter capable of trapping all the gasified water and not losing it in the exhaust gas.

Finally, the system is completely safe even in extreme conditions because it produces breathable oxygen as well as hydrogen for combustion, does not generate noxious or lethal gases, does not generate waste, is easy to assemble, operate and clean, contains solar panels and requires only water as fuel.

As the sowing time has to be synchronized with that of the land, so that the seeds can feel normality, the drip irrigation that they explain and the delivery of nutrients by the water, we do not use the combination of light and water, but We specialize in dark seeds to take advantage of 100% resources, we replace the Kevlar of the cultivation pads with rooting fabrics, since as we do not use substrate it is less busy, thus we improve automated technified irrigation, the magenta light used is standardized throughout the greenhouse system, just as we increased the number of colors to imitate terrestrial soil, we relied heavily on veggie experiences to be able to project our design,

Hackathon Journey

It has been a unique opportunity to meet people from different parts of the world whose purpose is to continue learning and contributing their ideas in order to improve the current situation of our planet and the Milky Way in general. During these days the SPACEED team has been able to organize, investigate and learn about projects developed by NASA that drive thousands of people like us to seek answers to this complex universe to which we belong. Our main reason for developing this project was that both people on earth and in space can get their own food without the need for various resources as the lack of food on earth is a problem that has been increasing for several years and on the other hand in space travel often has the difficulty of transporting healthy food, with good taste and that allows the crew to feel comfortable in their travels. The setbacks were constant during these days as the weather has played against us, however, the whole team made an effort and we are satisfied with our final project called INGREEN that we hope will be able to solve all the problems mentioned above. Our thanks to the organizers of the event will never be enough because encouraging young people from all over the world to be interested in science deserves all our admiration.
