SlideMap

High-Level Project Summary

As a team, our main goal was to make a time series map that uses NASA's global landslide data to showcase, for each country, their past landslides occurrences. Our focus was to create a user friendly interface for local and small communities in different countries, and solve the challenge by showing past landslide data for each area, this way giving people the opportunity to analyze the data for area research and study.

Detailed Project Description

Our project is an interactive map with two fields, country and year. When you select both the inputs, it takes you to a new page that pinpoints on the map all the landslides that occurred in the selected country and year, with different metrics (like number of fatalities, number of disasters, landslide triggers, etc). It's designed to be easy to use, and easy to import data into. It can also export the data that was filtered. Our prototype was done in Adobe XD. Our project was done in Flask, using it to create our rest routes and rendering Jinja templates. We hoped to create an easy to use software with clear data over countries landslides.

Space Agency Data

We managed to get some data resources to make our project goals. First of all we got the global landslide catalog from NASA sattelties, this data is in .csv format and has information about, locations, date time, description, fatalities count. All of this helped us to create user-friendly visualization. We also got the latitude and longitude from all countries, and used them to display the location in global map.

Hackathon Journey

It was very intense, the chance to work in a advanced global project, involving many resources to help improving our global ecossystem. Learned a lot, from tools to programming languages, teamwork, and a new approach to work locally in these times. We gathered information from NASA source, as a team utilized brainstorm techniquies and worked hard to display it for others. We sit together, talked a lot and united finding many approachs to solve the callenge. I would like to thank all my teammates for the hard work, and the NASA Recife that brought us the challenge.
