High-Level Project Summary

Athina belongs to Rangamati, a beautiful small hill town in Bangladesh. Born and brought up in the blessings of those mountains and the Kaptai Lake, she has seen calm mountains standing in a daze. But who would've thought that the mountains we are blessed with can bring such disasters? Mother nature is sure complicated sometimes. In 2017, the biggest landslides happened in Bangladesh when the calm mountains broke the silence, at least 152 people died in a landslide. In fact, more than 18,000 deaths, 4.8 million people are affected worldwide due to landslides. So to protect our people from landslides and to reduce the loss we have come up with an interactive, user friendly app -"Terraspy".

Detailed Project Description

'Terraspy' is an interactive, user friendly application that will collect data from various data sources, like- NASA landslide data, real time precipitation data, slope and terrain data to mark areas where a landslide is likely to occur.



  • Users can see more detailed information (past landslide records, precipitation data, elevation and surface information of the territory, lithology, potential human losses and the cost of impacts from landslides. Etc.) and pictures of that specific place.
  • Our project will have an interface for the public to enter raw and image data so that you contribute to our mission and help to raise the public's concern on landslides. People can earn points, and climb up the global leaderboard.
  • Then all of this data will be passed through a pre-trained machine learning model and calculate landslide risks. It will show constant risk and current risk information. If the prediction rises above 80% the people surrounding there will get a push notification in their phone. 
  • Our app will also help to create a bridge between the victims and the local emergency rescue team, one can ask for help by using the help button in the app.
  • It will also work as a guide of useful information on how to prepare an emergency kit, how to find your evacuation route, what to do before, during and after a landslide etc.

Hackathon Journey

In essence, this journey was wonderful. We have participated for the first time and got to explore a lot of ideas about NASA Resources and using them for greater motive.
