PROVE THE FACTS OF THE CLIMATE CRISIS WITH DATA SCIENCE - MULTIDISCIPLINARY GLOBAL IMPACT

High-Level Project Summary

What did we research in this project?· We observed FRP, BRIGHT T31, and BRIGHTNESS variables of some countries in the Mediterranean area and the change in these variables from 2000 to 2021. We believe in that hot-points based on FRP and BRIGHTNESS values from NASA FIRMS analysis can be a solution for predict global warming.· There is a major increase in FRP, BRIGHT T31, and BRIGHTNESS values from the beginning of the 2000s.Why did we observe these data, and how is this observation has an important role in understanding climate change's effects?· To see how can climate change affect our lives in just 20 years, and to make a prediction about how can it affect us in the future.

Detailed Project Description

Do you think there are more grains of sand on Earth or planets in the universe?

Our research says that there are more planets in the universe. NASA alone has 4,525 confirmed exoplanets. This is a good number considering that our search for exoplanet started in the 1990s, but according to the Drake equation, there are 10,000 potentially life-bearing or even intelligent life-bearing planets in our galaxy alone.

If we increase the dataset, it is not impossible for us to reach a planet that contains life and even intelligent life. Still, life is priceless. Even if there are 10,000 planets, it is estimated that there are 100-200 billion planets in our galaxy, which reduces the number of planets with intelligent life in our galaxy to 0.00001. I just want to tell you how valuable even the breath you take right now is with probabilities. I want to tell you that our planet is as valuable as a planet that is 1 in 100 thousand.

Do you think we are using this planet well enough?

By 2015, 6.3 trillion kilograms of plastic was produced. Only 9% of these are recycled. The rest was scattered around us and into the oceans. Plastics make up 80 percent of the debris poured into the sea. These plastics bring about 800 species living in the ocean face to face with extinction. Of course they know, but the plastic market size of 2020 is 502 billion dollars.

What you breathe is not just oxygen! Air pollution, predominantly caused by fossil fuel consumption, endanger 90 percent of the global population. It causes 7 million premature deaths, 600,000 of which are children, every year. It causes a loss of 5 trillion dollars to the global economy.

In the knowledge age, where access to information is not as difficult as it used to be, everyone can produce science wherever they want, and it continues to be a hope for humanity with the science it produces. Artificial intelligence studies, nano technology studies, space colonization studies, in short, all fields where science works today show that there is still hope for both our world and humanity.

We need to take action!

This year, forest fires in late summer reveal the extent of global warming. The heat waves that hit the Mediterranean coasts almost burn the coasts. Ocean waters are warmer than ever and are rising day by day.

The concept of light can be very useful both in the field of astronomy and in studies to save the world. If we understand light, we can both understand space and save the world.

For this reason, we analyzed the forest fire disaster that hit many countries this year and added a new one to the purposes of using NASA FIRMS data. Our country-based analyzes not only revealed the facts specific to that country, but also revealed similarities on a global scale.

What did we observe in shortly?

  • The highest FRP value of the last 20 years was measured.
  • The highest detected FRP and BRIGHTNESS values in Turkey is in Manavgat, Antalya.
  • With the growth in global temperatures, the unforeseen fires that started in the forests started to threaten domestic areas more easily with the wind factor.
  • An intense similarity was found between Greece, Italy, and Turkey.
  • The year 2021 has set a new threshold and has been the year in which anomalies were most unstable.

While these observations go on, also we have been tried to capture details about FRP and BRIGHTNESS values.

We discovered that by determining threshold values, predictive models can be built on it.

We analyzed all the anatomical features of these forest fires last summer using NASA FIRMS data and created a report. In this way, we wanted to show people that this data can also be used for various purposes.

We believe in the power of data science and think it can change the world. We know that these methods can be applied worldwide and that a global temperature value can be determined and prediction models can be built on it. Within the scope of this study, you will see various analysis methods and new approaches. In addition, we also carried out studies based on Antarctica using Goddard data. We've proven how important heat spot detection is.

We took the whole study piece by piece and coded it particularly simply so that we could explain the logic well to people. For those who want to use and benefit from, we used these lines of code cleanly and took care to explain all the parameters. It was a long term work. You will be able to see all works in one drive link that we shared "final project" line.

Stay with science!

We are the guardian of the universe!

  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

  • European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites

  • Japan Meteorological Agency • Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

This type of earth observation data is vital for the whole world. Valuable data scientists and scientists can use this world data for the benefit of humanity. Our interest in astronomy is also fed by our intense interest in the concept of light. For this reason, we think that understanding light is also important for saving the world. NASA FIRMS data is particularly well suited for this. He saved the lives of many living things during forest fires. For this reason, it is of great importance to work on these data.

Hackathon Journey

The realities we uncovered within the scope of this competition have greatly affected us. Working with such data in the competition has made a great contribution to individual development. We are very pleased to exhibit practices by prioritizing data science in such a competition.

We chose this challenge area because we do not see this experimental work as belonging to any class, but also because we want to touch on all the realities of global warming.

We thought that this way we could have a greater impact and announce our work to the world. These methods and approaches can bring new ideas to many people.
