High-Level Project Summary
My name is Jack Vincent and I am the only member of "3d printing mayhem". Letting it go without a bang seemed like a cool problem. The Rotational Lock Decoupling Device offers a good answer for both softly decoupling deployable structures and quickly releasing chutes. The servo turns a pin between the locked and unlocked positions. This solution to decoupling could be reused and implemented in a wide range of spacecraft.

Detailed Project Description
This mechanism is a prototype made from PLA 3d printed plastic and powered by a Towerpro MG92B servo. It was printed using a Prusa i3 printer. The final product would be either molded or 3d printed in metal and use a more heat resistant motor. Because the prototype was designed in Fusion 360 it can be easily scaled up or down for different motors and uses; in this case I went on the larger side because I needed it to be big enough for my servo and I was limited by my 3d printer setup. The prototype I designed is a simple rotational locking mechanism controlled by a servo, this allows pre-flight testing as well as eliminating use of pyrotechnics.
Space Agency Data
The intro video for the challenge really helped me to understand what was required, a more diverse device that doesn't cause a high force event. I was also inspired by https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/constellation/ares/parachute_results.html to make a reusable reefing cutter. I was also majorly inspired by my kitchen blender's lid to make the locking mechanism.
Hackathon Journey
I really enjoyed the space apps experience and loved making something so quickly. My one regret is that I did it solo, maybe next year.
