Horus Separation Device (HSD)

High-Level Project Summary

Our device is based on changing the separation mechanism to overcome the high shock event and separate the two parts smoothly. It consists of two main parts: the outer and inner parts, a wire, spring, and battery. The outer part is hollow having a part made of steel at the bottom, and it has a pathway designed to allow the prominent parts of the inner part to pass. A wire will be coiled around the inner part and connected to the battery. Once the electricity passes inside the wire; it will create a magnetic field around this part acting as a magnet, then the whole part will be pulled downwards to the steel. The springs will pull the inner part, resulting in separating both parts smooth.

Detailed Project Description

Separating spacecraft parts has always been a tough challenge to scientists and engineers working on this from all over the globe, and overcoming the high shock event separation to reach the phase of smooth separation has been much harder.

The resulted pollution that is caused to the environment (the bang), and the debris left behind, all of these represent harm to the whole world.

So, we got inspired by this challenge in particular and we were excited to work on a proper solution.

Hence, we thought of the idea of our device which we call “Horus Separation Device” (HSD) for short and then we started applying it.

About HSD:

It is addressing the high-shock event resulted during the separation mechanism, it is based on changing the mechanism of separation associated with high shock (explosion) to separating these two parts smoothly, by providing our device with abundant cost-effective, eco-friendly, recyclable materials.

The idea is to replace the pyro cutter of the parachute with our device, that way we can cut the rope without cracking.

The Construction and The Development of HSD:

Our device consists of two main parts; --part1, and part2--, which are connected, a wire, metallic cylinder, springs, and battery. Part2 is hollow and it has a pathway that is uniquely designed to allow the passage of the prominent parts of part1. At the bottom of part2, we will be fixing a part made of steel (part3).

Then, a wire will be coiled around part1 and connected to the battery so when electricity is applied, it would create a magnetic field around this part acting as a magnet and the whole part will be attracted towards part,

Then springs would do the rest of the work and would pull the whole inner part, which means we would get the smooth separation required from the beginning. Hence, our solution is not only feasible, but it provided simplicity, frugality, reliability, and most importantly, safety, those are the main benefits of our solution. We used SolidWorks as the software in developing our device and choose the most effective materials.

We used the mechanism of separation of parachute and how does it works from it.

Hackathon Journey

Our hackathon journey was far more than inspiring and moving! We managed to work as a team together, we exchanged thoughts, experiences, and ideas, we thought as one person, the cooperation got us all in the challenge.

It was not an easy process for all of us at first, we wanted to be challenged and then rewarded with the knowledge and experiences we gained from just participating and being a part of such a great community!

The challenges we met throughout our journey were not just barriers blocking the way to our goal, but they were a reason for

keeping us as a team moving forward.

Nasa not just intended to create the team spirit among us, but it shaped a new way each one of us needed in his way of thinking, beginning from collaboration up until gaining a new experience in tackling challenges that could make a better future for all of us.
