FOD FOLLOWER

High-Level Project Summary

We created FOD (Foreing Object Debris) the main function is to detect through swarms of plastic including other types of solid contaminants, they are unidirectional cameras located on top of poles in rivers or at specific points on beaches. We solve Through the use of AI and revolutionary tools such as dredging cameras including drones with dredges, efficient results are obtained by detecting all types of additional plastic waste in rivers or specific points in the sea/beach, it is important to take care of our waters and the species that live in them, avoid that our environment is affected at all costs even if others do not want. That is why we implement tools to solve this at the root.

Detailed Project Description

THE ECOCAMS are complemented with DRONES equipped with the same dual technology - IMAGE/RADAR. Each ECO-DRON has its own ID with beach and sea coasts assigned with predefined trajectories.

The ECO-DRONs thanks to their Artificial Intelligence can also communicate with each other with the purpose of vectoring on the shores of beaches and seas where a massive number of debris is registered in order to obtain the most accurate number of accounting.

  • In this way we have a network of fixed ECO-CAM and dynamic ECO-DRON coverage.

The transmission technology of these data provided by the ECO-DRON/CAM is an encrypted 4G/5G signal sent to a ground station where it is processed by computers whose MACHINE LEARNING allows sending commands only to the ECO-DRONs to visit different coasts when the data shows a low debris count, but always leaving an ECO-DRON (backup) in its predetermined coast for the continuity of monitoring.

  • status of all equipment (CAMS-DRONS) is also monitored by the ground station from BITE-TEST circuits integrated internally in the CAMS-DRONS to rule out erroneous data.

All data collected by the ground station is shared with local national entities to eventually establish a collection contingency for the accumulation of these wastes, including plans to raise awareness of cleanliness culture in the areas with greater accounting of these polluting objects. Smart Phone applications will also disseminate the data disclosing the areas with the highest contamination and allowing a mapping, as well as allowing users to report waste supported by photos to feed the FOD Follower system data.

DRONE + AI - Trash Detection and Immediate Collection

- If flying drones have already become an increasingly common sight in landscapes, everything points to the fact that ground robots dedicated to different tasks, from package delivery to garbage collection, will soon become a common sight in the urban landscape.

- A DJI Phantom 4 adapted with artificial intelligence technology to identify and classify waste; it recognizes the concentration of pollution thanks to some learning algorithms and detects the accumulation of plastic. The equipment, modified and calibrated by the organization, has helped in the planning of initiatives achieved by 'The Plastic Tide', since with the data collected it is possible to draw strategies and find the best solution for the problems.

Space Agency Data

During the data collection we obtained valuable information on the care of water and specifically of seas and rivers, with this we determined an effective and very functional solution in the long term we will share some links where we obtained information also emphasize that additional research was conducted with other sources to determine specific functions for our project that is the radar, drones and cameras.

Hackathon Journey

Without a doubt a very challenging experience at another level in basic terms in which we were able to experiment with the data provided and with it we got ideas to create a very efficient project for us and for others because the important thing about our project was what it was focused on and why it was focused on that term, and we got the idea of FOD a cutting edge tool. Without a doubt my team from the moment we were informed that we would participate we concentrated 100% to find an immediate solution in the short term and that it would work in the long term. clearly we had some setbacks due to colleagues who were working but everything was carried out on time and we thank NASA for having this event, our professor Ruben Metro from the metrology course for the motivation and professor Ivan for the invitation to this event.
