Visualizing Marine Debris Using AI/ML

High-Level Project Summary

What Is Our Project:We designed a robot that scans the underwater in groups with Side-Scan Sonar. This information is recorded and sent to a database. Then an AI categorises this information and visualise it on a map. How Does it solve the challenge:We hope that with this kind of system we will help scientist and researchers to see and manipulate the usage of non-organic materials such as plastics. Why is it important:Marine life is one of the most important and beautiful ecosystems in the world. It contributes greatly to carbon cycle. Infact over 50% of the air we breathe is from marine life and many more. But Marine debris threaten the marine life greatly. we must protect it.

Detailed Project Description

How Does Our Project Works?

We designed several electronic devices for our project. These are:

  • Underwater Robots
  • Drones
  • Stations
  • Computer Systems

Underwater Robots will scan the underwater with side-scan sonar for marine debris, since 70% of marine debris are underwater. For the debris on water we designed drones. Drones will take bird's eye view photographs of marine debris. These information then send to computer systems via Settellites.

Computer Systems then process the information, looking for Marine debris. This processed information then categorized by artifial intelligance. These categories will be saved in databases with information types like debri type, location and density etc. these databases then used for creating a map, showing the distribution of marine debris types.

Since these robots can be damaged, lost or broken, there will be stations on water. The robots will monitored and overseed from these stations and can be remotely controlled anytime via internet. Damaged robots will stay here until they repaired. Robots also charge themselves using these stations. The power needed for these stations are provided from renewable energy sources such as Sun, wind or sea current.
