Robot Vitamin Sea

High-Level Project Summary

Vitamin Sea is an autonomous sea saver robot. It saves the sea by keeping it’s ecological balance stable. It saves the sea from the trash and other harmful things. By doing this we are able to save the underwater animals too. The main problem is millions of people come to visit sea beaches and they throw their trashes here and there. Most of the trashes are made by plastics and those plastics are very harmful for the animals as well as the environment. This robot uses artificial intelligence to identify trashes and collect them to minimize the pollution. Besides this, the robot encourages travelers to store their trash in it with exchange of a reward.

Detailed Project Description

Problems/Issues :

So, the problem is the plastics which are thrown by tourists in the sea beach. This robot is necessary for solving the problem, because it has the ability to increase the interest in keeping trash to the robot. There are many dustbins near the beach side but anyone l. haven’t much interest to walk for keeping the trashes. The improvement might be like Vitamin Sea , which can collect the trashes from the travelers autonomously! Besides this people are not aware of plastic pollution. That’s why our new generation is also not aware of saving the earth from plastic pollution.

Vitamin Sea As a Solution:

When the robots get activated it will search and detect those peoples who have trash on their hand using AI. After that, If the robot detects trash in someone's hand, it will go near the visitor by measuring distance using AI and it will ask “Hello there, do you have something to trash? if you have then give it to me, I will give you a surprise gift in exchange of it. If the traveler shows the trash to the robot, it will take it from the visitor and will give him a candy as a gift. After this it will play a short video on it’s screen about the plastic pollution and the benefits of keeping trash into a certain place. By doing this the robot saves the sea from the plastics and also inspires people to keep trash into a certain place. Another hand if it finds any plastics or trash falling on the beach side, it will detect and will go near the trash to collect autonomously.

Workflow:

Our project is supported by two microcontrollers. One is a raspberry pi and the other is an Arduino. We have used the Android based operating system Lineage for Raspberry Pi. We have used the HC-05 Bluetooth module to connect with Arduino via bluetooth. We have developed an app for image processing. When the camera detects a bottle or any trash, our application will send data to Arduino. Then arduino will process the data and open the bottle entry chamber. There’s an IR sensor inside the chamber. On the other hand, it will send a signal to Arduino to make sure the bottle has entered properly. After this, it sends data to the candy station. The data will be sent to Raspberry Pi via Bluetooth. After this, it will play a short animation based on the impacts of plastic pollution on the display. Besides this, if it finds any trash falling in the ground by scanning autonomously using image processing, it will go near the trash by measuring distance. The whole system is based on Artificial Intelligence.

Innovative Direction :

There’s some dustbin near the sea beach but they aren’t autonomous like Vitamin Sea. Other hand, everyone is interested in technology, for being an intelligent dustbin, it increases the interest of people. Another biggest difference between Vitamin Sea and the current solution is when the visitor keeps the dust to the robot it will give a surprise gift. Besides this, no one discusses the bad effects of plastic pollution. But it plays a short animation about this, so that our new generation can get aware of plastic pollution.

Motive and Goal:

Our main goal is to make a plastic pollution free generation. We think, providing candy as a gift in exchange of trash is enough to increase interest to keep trash into a certain dustbin. Beside this, after collecting the trash from travelers, it will show a short video on it’s screen about the plastic pollution, how to get rid of this challenge and how to be a part of making a pollution free environment. The process is specially designed for children to make them aware about not to throw trash here and there.

Space Agency Data

To work with this problem, we have used EPA's data about toxicological threats of plastics. According to their data it shows that plastics are the most harmful debris for water and environment. Those data helped us a lot to find out the main reasons for solving the challenge.

Hackathon Journey

There were several phases in the project and without experienced team members it was not possible to execute the challenges . The whole project depends on the success in different fields. We managed to find team members according to the project requirements. Sayedul Mostain Taranga was the team leader and hardware engineer, Shoaib Mahmud - head of programming section, Abu Talha - app developer, Sayma Arefin - project manager and Sayedul Mottakin - designer. Besides this Our honorable mentor Zubayer Al Billal Khan and Mohammad Mahdee Uz Zaman sir guided us a lot to build up the project nicely. Overall, it was a great experience to participate in the hackathon.
