Orbit

High-Level Project Summary

Orbit is an application that allows for the seamless integration of console log information from many users. The application features an elegant web interface that allows users to effortlessly create logs view the logs of others as they are being created in real-time. Log creation is simple for users and allows them to include additional metadata (such as images). All logs are stored in an easily accessible format that enables long-term record keeping for future reference. Orbit allows users to simultaneously collaborate, contributing towards overall mission success by facilitating improved communication.

Detailed Project Description

Orbit is a real-time collaboration platform that allows users to seamlessly log information and view the logs of others. The user has the ability to see logs previously created by themselves and others, which is being updated live as logs are added. The user can specify which filters to apply beside the console log. Filters can be by the user who created the log or the category the log falls under. This allows the user to see logs that are only relevant to their area of the mission. The video feed on the bottom left is intended to be used during a mission, and allows a user to easily attach an image of the mission in progress.  On the bottom, a user can create a new log and add any appropriate metadata. They can also tag previous logs, allowing for follow up to previous reports.

Orbit has the dashboard for a frontend, which is the what the user sees and interacts with. There is also a backend that relies on API calls to access data in a database. A user's logs are instantaneously added, and are immediately seen by other people who are working on the same mission. We hope this will improve overall communication within mission teams, as well as allow for concise record keeping to be used for future reference.

Orbit was created using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript using Bootstrap, Node.js, and Express.js frameworks.

Space Agency Data

As our challenge does not require us to use space agency data, we were inspired by communication logs from previous space missions. Most of the logs we added to the console were taken from the communications during the Apollo 11 mission.

Hackathon Journey

The NASA Space Apps challenge was an exceptional learning experience that provided us a unique opportunity to explore our passion for space and for us to utilize and improve our web-development skills. In creating this project, we were able to explore and learn various different frameworks. We were inspired to choose this challenge since we believed that it allowed us to best utilize our technical abilities and contribute in a meaningful manner. In developing this project, we initially planned out the webpage design and user experience. We first developed the back-end data management and created API calls to store and retrieve the data. We then created the dashboard for the user to interact with. Along the way, we ran into many challenges, such as creating the webpage to how we envisioned, and working with new and unfamiliar tools. Ultimately, we were able to overcome these challenges and create a product that we were satisfied with. Moving forward, we would like to continue working on and refining our product, adding features such as user log in.
