SkyScanner: the roomba of space

High-Level Project Summary

Our project creates a real-time 3D visualization of debris in space. It is possible also to check the history (past state) of the same debris around the world. At the same time, interaction with the debris allows discovering more data about it. We provide an altitude range with the highest debris density.

Detailed Project Description

Our solution:

The user can access our application through the available link. When loaded, the page produces a virtual environment of planet earth and space. Through points in space, debris is represented by 3 colours:

-Red: debris that are within a maximum distance of 2000 km to the earth (LEO)

-yellow: debris that are within a range of 2000 km to 35756 km to the earth (MEO)

-Green: remaining debris (GEO)

With the mouse, the user can interact with the objects and rotate the space for observation in a particular region. By clicking on the top of specific debris, real-time data (velocity, geographic coordinates and estimated orbit) are displayed.

At the same time, a real-time study is made of the density of debris in space.

Our purpose:

Our application allows visualization and determination of the altitude range with highest density of debris in space. With this, future space missions to clean up space can take into consideration the optimum altitude for debris collection. At the same time, decreasing the debris zone reduces the possibility of collisions, decreasing the probability of debris cloud formation.

Hackathon Journey

It has been an amazing journey! Our team is composed of a group of close friends. But, this is the first time that we had a chance to hang out in a different environment: facing a challenge, being creative, learning and applying any knowledge that we think is relevant for our final project.
