Can it reach near-space?

High-Level Project Summary

For this challenge, the Dirty Bits team developed an interactive website to conduct lesson plans that are user-friendly for students to understand. This is an amazing initiative for the students to learn and experience handling a High-Altitude Balloon in school that can improve their understanding of space to complement the school lessons during science classes. This is important because most Science lessons regarding space are only taught on the surface level in consequence the students in Malaysia have only exposed themselves to theories about space.

Detailed Project Description

This website that was designed by Dirty Bits has lesson plans that can guide the students to properly built a High-altitude balloon that is capable of reaching greater heights. As the students visit the website, it will display multiple lessons that they can go through step-by-step with their teachers to complete the task. Having a lesson plan to build something so simple yet tricky will help the students to learn about the importance of building a machine such as a High-Altitude Balloon carefully and obtaining stunning footage at near-space. In this challenge, the Dirty Bits Team use a prototyping tool which is Figma to create a prototype website for this challenge. This online prototyping tool allows the team members to interactively collaborate with one another to finish up the website design.

Hackathon Journey

Since this Hackathon was held for the very first time in Sarawak, Malaysia – We were so excited to join in and participate such global event! We love the interactive website and thorough guidelines that were provided by the NASA Space Apps team that helped the team so much since day 1. From this incredible Space Apps Journey, we learn that good communication, dedication and handwork really help us to drive forward in completing the challenges. In addition, the challenges provided were so good and fun to explore but the one challenge that really attracted us was Near-Space Near You. As a team, we looked back at our previous high school life, and we realized that we did not have the opportunity to explore the space and its wonder – so by having this challenge we hope that the future young generation will get the chance to do this project and have the best hands-on experience. The main setback that we faced was that in Malaysia not many shopping platforms are selling the HAB equipment hence we do not get the chance to build a HAB. Finally, we would like to thank the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research and Realfun Learning Centre for making this awesome event a success because without them and the other collaborators, we are not able to join and gain such phenomenal experience.
