High-Level Project Summary
We developed a lesson-plan and BOM to teach students how to build a low-cost high-altitude balloon capable of reaching near-space. Our lesson plan can be access online and available to anyone from around the world. In most cases there are high costs associated with this field of study, however HAB have provided a lower barrier-of-entry for others to explore the field.

Detailed Project Description
This Project provides a lesson-plan and bill of materials (BOM) on how to build a low-cost high-altitude balloon capable of reaching near-space, 20 - 100 kilometres above sea level. Our in depth lesson plan provides insight on; background of HAB, Bill of materials (BOM), laws and regulations, how HAB works, designing and building a HAB.
- Software used: Tinkercad, GitHub, VScode
- Coding languages used: C++
- Mark-up languages used: HTML, CSS
Space Agency Data
For this study we used:
The knowledge gained from these sources resulted in opting for Conventional ballooning approach which uses direct line-of-sight electronics for command and data, with flight durations ranging from a few hours to days. This determined the BOM and overall build.
Hackathon Journey
Space Apps experience was extremely fun but also challenging, throughout our journey we all learnt and discovered a lot about the field of HAB, and was definitely more complicated than we thought 🤣
We decided to tackle this challenge as the field of space travel has always been very expensive, thus lower barrier-of-entry for others to explore the field. However, HAB are much more affordable and with the right equipment and necessary precautions anyone who is passionate can make their own and explore not space but close to space, near space.
We are disappointed that due to time limitations we weren't able to dive in deeper in to the physics side of things in more detail as it would have been fascinating and beneficial to be included as part of the lesson plan. However, overall we are very happy with what we managed accomplished over such a short period.
