Unjust distribution of water resources in Chiapas

High-Level Project Summary

We developed a proposal to solve the scarcity of water in marginalized areas, using an infrastructure which directs the resource to these areas, in the process it is cleaned by means of filters to ensure the health of the population. To solve this problem is very important to reduce the levels of scarcity of resources and improve the quality of life of the inhabitants since the minimum amount of water available is contaminated, also seeking to raise awareness among the inhabitants about the situation in their environment.

Detailed Project Description

Injustice in the equitable distribution of water resources in marginalized areas of the state of Chiapas caused by the lack and inefficiency of water distribution and treatment systems.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), less than 50% of the population in Chiapas has access to water, due to the high cost of bringing the liquid to the Sierra and Highlands areas, where the poorest communities in the state and the nation are located. This, added to the loss of resources through leaks due to the inefficiency of the current distribution systems, generates an alarming environmental injustice.

In Chiapas there is a great contrast when we refer to this water resource, since the communities in the highlands have practically no access to it, on the other hand, there are many communities near the rivers which, even with this advantage, do not have efficient distribution systems.

Water treatment is a priority in this Mexican state, as it has a high rate of contamination, causing at least a third of the population to suffer from gastrointestinal illnesses.

This distribution and sanitation problem has been evaluated by the Mexican government, which is why there is a quota for investment to improve the distribution system; however, the government has not provided good results, so the population increasingly refuses to pay these quotas.

The main problem with the solutions proposed by the government are:

First, the projects are not consulted with the population, which causes great uncertainty about the actions that are carried out.

On the other hand, the projects do not have a sufficient basis for feasibility analysis, the planning is deficient and they present technical problems in terms of design.

All this has caused a high level of distrust in the Chiapas population.

Having analyzed the above data, the Artemis team came to the conclusion that the breaking point of this problem is the confidence of the people, for which it is necessary to design a project with good foundations, whose first purpose is to seek approval and feedback from the people of Chiapas. And that is what was done, with the support of satellite resources provided by NASA, it was possible to obtain a complete panorama of the state's geography and identify the location of marginalized areas and water resources.

This analysis led to the following proposal:

Our purpose is that marginalized areas without access to the vital liquid, have access to it, in order to do this we have to collect information from satellites on the water cycle to detect the areas in need, after that proceed to conduct a soil survey with drones to collect more information from these areas to detect the places that are suitable for implementing water infrastructure, already having all the information will create a report with the proposal and its statistics to present it to the resident communities of the selected areas.

At the conclusion of this process, the construction of the infrastructure and the actions required to carry out the plan will be carried out.

Space Agency Data

For the development of our project we used different data provided by the satellites, first we collected specific data to identify which are the water cycles of certain areas to select which need this resource, for that after having this information an analysis is performed to detect the most prominent and thus proceed to make the proposal of the infrastructure with respect to the result obtained on the data of the soil, to expose the situation to the people and thus contribute to raising awareness on the subject.

Hackathon Journey

For us as a team it was something quite unique, mostly because it was our first time in a contest like this, besides the fact that we discovered how the satellites work according to the information they collect; we learned and got to know situations that we had no idea of their existence, how pollution gradually affects the communities and that the proposals made in the past depend on their population, so the quality of them define the present and future of the area.

The inspiration to develop this project came from the desire to make a change for those people who do not have sufficient and necessary resources for their lives.

The team presented challenges, which could be solved with organization, time and research of the proposed topic. We would like to thank Space Apps for giving us the opportunity to participate in this contest to evaluate our ability to solve problems in everyday life.
