Green Quest

High-Level Project Summary

Green Quest uses NASA api data and UNDP HRO api data to locate marginalized community. The app helps the players become more conservative towards environment and the challenges help to form good habits that can actually make impact in a large scale.

Detailed Project Description

In today's world, where the privileged are contributing more towards environmental pollution compared to the marginalized communities, but the marginalized communities are suffering more despite having very little control over it, we have come up with an idea which can take the world closer to an equitable solution. Our four step solution will be implemented using a user friendly and informative web app.

  • The first step is about using facts to encourage people to complete certain challenges which will help to build empathy towards marginalized people alongside an environmentally friendly lifestyle.
  • Our second step will focus on encouraging people to work with their own communities to make relatively large-scale changes and we will encourage this by maintaining a leaderboard based on users’ activities.
  • Next, we identify injustices around the world by analyzing NASA’s Earth Data and different quality of life indexed, such as access to clean water and food, education, housing, health, income, to draw an easily comprehensible visualization of how marginalized communities have to suffer a vastly disproportional impact of our deteriorating climate.
  • In our last step, we will provide links to external sources regarding how an individual can contribute from their current positions including links to charitable and research organizations that help to fight the environmental injustices marginalized people are facing around the globe.

The players are given challenges that include:

  1. Feel the pain and contribute yourself [because you need to feel what the marginalized people are going through]
  2. Emphatical Challenges
  3. Use paper instead of plastic
  4. Use public transport
  5. Contribute with the community and spread awareness
  6. Local leaderboard for environmental condition
  7. Be informed about the local policies. Be mindful of whom you elect
  8. Organize awareness day/week
  9. Encourage businesses to be more environment friendly
  10. Identify reasons and report
  11. Keep lookout for factors that are creating pollution
  12. Donate to nearby voluntary organizations for environment
  13. Support new environment friendly technology

Tech Stack

  • MongoDB Atlas

(Used for database and handling the APIs)

  • React

(Used for frontend)

  • NodeJS

(Used for backend)

  • Express

(Framework of backend)

The Complete Picture

  • We find climate injustices by calculating the effects of climate change in a community and the quality of life of that community. If a community has a very poor quality of life and also suffers heavily from impacts from climate change, that is climate injustice.
  • We get location-based natural event metadata from EONET and compare it with human index related data from HDRO to identify specific climate injustices

Space Agency Data

The Earth Observatory Natural Event Tracker (EONET) provides a curated source of continuously updated natural event metadata and, service that links those natural events to thematically-related web service-enabled image sources (e.g., via WMS, WMTS, etc.).

Emissions API is a service providing a REST interface to easily access satellite-based emissions data from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-5P satellite.

Hackathon Journey

This is our first time participating in the SpaceApps challenge. It was exciting and an awesome learning curve in our student life.

Our project taught us about the various NASA APIs that we can use for the greater good of the world. We learnt the frameworks needed to implement the project.

In our country, seeing the sufferings of the marginalized people, which are in many cases due to environmental reasons, inspired us to go for a project in this category.
