PURI-Pack

High-Level Project Summary

We have developed a portable backpack purifier that can provide clean water on the go using energy generated from a cycle. Problem solved: Inadequate or no access to safe drinking water in rural communities facing drought conditions or residing near a contaminated water source. Since our product is affordable and has low power requirements, it is an easily implementable solution. This solution not only provides clean water and facilitates better sanitation but also indirectly presents new opportunities for improved education and economic growth, because a lot of children, especially the girl child are denied education solely because they are thrust with the responsibility of fetching water.

Detailed Project Description

-Initial and Final Water quality

The change in water quality can be determined by the color of the water and active microbial content present in the impure water, along with the residue collected after the purification. Other methods also include checking of pH of the water before and after the filtration process. This provides the results of our model!

-Working of water filter

The various stages of filtration taking place in the PURI-Pack are as follows:-

  • The water inlet fills the three filtration chambers simultaneously.
  • When the water flows from the first chamber to the next, it undergoes ultrafiltration by removal of impurities sized 80 microns due to the stainless steel mesh between the chambers.
  • The flow of water from the second chamber to the third chamber the depth filtration technique is implemented which separates impurities of size 15 microns.
  • In the first two chambers, an adsorbing zeolite ‘clinoptilolite mineral’ removable bottom is attached which adsorbs bio-chemical impurities.
  • When all the three chambers are filled, the electrodes come in contact with water and electrification takes place where the membrane of the microorganisms is ruptured leading to lysis of the same.
  • When the copper cap is in contact with water, the released copper ions, in accordance with the oligodynamic effect, the ions compete with the microorganisms resulting in their compaction and microbial death.
  • After the filtration process is complete, following Stevin's law, the purified water flows out through the outlet pipe.
  • The water from the outlet can be stored in an external storage container and can repeat the same process again.

-Advantages

  • Portable
  • Compact
  • Runs on alternative source of energy
  • Consumes lesser energy
  • Energy efficient
  • Follows traditional principles with advanced way of implementation
  • Supports Sustainable Goals

-Blender(for 3D)- used for 3Dimensional modelling.

#The PURI-Pack purifies water in a three-step filtration method using copper, zeolite, and electrolysis using an electrode made from e-waste. The energy generated by the dynamos attached to the cycle electrolyze the water and help to reduce the turbidity and separate the unwanted ions from it. The model is very simple to use and can be easily adapted to increase efficiency.

We want to lower the number of people facing drinking water shortages and the deaths that are caused due to various diseases that are caused by drinking contaminated water. This implementation will also open up opportunities for women in our society and help the economy prosper as well. We have used software such as Blender for the 3d models and visualizations, Canva software for the presentation, and drive database software to communicate the information and jotting down the research made by everyone on the team.

Space Agency Data

  • This link provides information regarding injustice and inequality faced by marginalized, minoritized, tribal, indigenous, and low-income communities which are also called the disproportionate burden of environmental challenges which includes affecting factors like drinking water shortage, climate change, etc. So that we could come up with an innovative, implementable solution to resolve the same.

  • Jaxa's space agency data- reveals details regarding environmental phenomena like rainfall, flora, and fauna which helps us analyze and record data within a particular period.

  • This is a presentation that gives us insights into various techniques of resource management across the globe. We also get details on various satellites which are launched and are yet to be launched for satisfying the purpose of finding data on the spread of resources which gives us a chance to frame better resource management techniques and implementation of the same. Likewise, we have designed the applications of our model to enhance the same

  • Here we obtain colored images of various water bodies viewed from the perspective of the satellite, we can evaluate the biochemical composition of the waterbody, where the color is inferred from the wavelengths emitted by the chemicals and microbes present in a particular water body. This helped us identify the majority of impurities present commonly in the water. In this way, we compiled the working principles of our model to purify the water accordingly.

Hackathon Journey

We started off our journey by soaring through the NASA resources, brainstorming various problems that are being faced all over the world, and finalized to tackle the drinking water problems faced in various rural areas across India.

Researching upon the various lakes and rivers of the country to find the physiochemical analysis and then designing a purifier that would be simple to use, pocket friendly, and runs on green energy was our plan of action. That is when the interesting part began, some of our teammates took to the field and spoke to people who have to walk miles to get drinkable water and also the rural people who live near the Osman Sagar lake. Once we received the crucial insights we started trialing and testing various methods we can use, reading patents, looking up research papers and the best possible option we concluded with was the innovation PURI-Pack.

We would like to thank the whole team of NASA for providing this extremely wonderful opportunity to learn, explore and solve real-time challenges with implementable solutions and futuristic scope of developing the same. All the participants are grateful to the team for providing an amazing platform, huge satellite data resource access, great coordinating teams through a chat like the SME’s and Ambassadors from NASA.

We are also thankful to our Local Lead and Coordinators for navigating us through the hackathon journey and guiding us on the submission of the project.

We also thank our institution VIT CHENNAI for encouraging us to take part in this international event.
