Space Quest:The Game

High-Level Project Summary

Insufficient knowledge of children (5-8 years old) in the field of astronomy, encouraged us to take part in this year's NASASpaceAppsChallenge. Specifically, we took part in the Space Quest:The Game challenge where we created an idea for a game from which they could learn in a creative way. To prove our point we conducted a survey of 15 kids in the age group of 5 to 8 years old.Considering kids don't get taught enough about the universe, our aim is to fit this fun project into the school system and give the kids a chance to learn through interactive gameplay which has proved to be effective long-term.

Detailed Project Description

As a long-term solution, we hope to add this interactive game into the school systems, the player would be able to choose to play solo or with other players (multiplayer format). They would start their experience on planet Earth by finding resources and facing challenges to complete the level. The added historical information is an addition of facts released by NASA, which helps the players understand the universe. Each 5 levels, the player unlocks a new planet. Not only will the players get to explore and learn about new planets, they would also get the chance to explore stars, galactic spaces, comets, asteroids, spaceships and many more additions. By the feature of customizing their characters, the players will get a way to express themselves in a creative way. By the end of each level, they would be tested for their knowledge by fun minigames which help with development of the brain. Each planet's missions get harder by the level.

To create our project demo, we used the following programs:

  • Adobe After Effects CC 2020
  • Adobe Photoshop 2021
  • Adobe XD 2021
  • Adobe Fresco 2021

Space Agency Data

As a part of our project, we used open data from the NASA websites, which corresponds with the age group that the game is intended for. The data from the NASA Kid's Club helped us create a kid-friendly environment which can help them understand the game better. As well as NASA's Space Place, that allowed us to get a lot more kid-friendly information that we used in the game, such as historical facts, general facts etc.

Hackathon Journey

While working on our project, we were honored to work with some amazing people, and learn more about space ourselves. Considering that most children don't have enough resources to increase their knowledge in the field of Astronomy, we decided to work on a project that would help them learn more in a fun way. In the short period of time we were given, we had some challenges on the way but with the help of an amazing mentor (Aleksandar Bojkovski), we were able to work through them and finish our project on time. We would like to thank everyone involved in this hackathon for giving people a chance to express their ideas in a creative way, to help solve real problems around the world.
