High-Level Project Summary

World is a 3D space exploration game made in the Unity game engine. You can fly your space ship around the galaxy, and explore the planets you land on. Collect materials to upgrade your ship, and you might even find some extraterrestrial enemies to defeat...

Detailed Project Description

World is a 3D game centered around exploring planets and finding certain materials to help you upgrade your ship and explore further than before. You can either fly above the surface of the planet to locate places to extract resources, or drive a rover on the ground to collect them. Sometimes, you'll be met with agressive alien beings you have to defeat with your weapons.

The game's mechanics are supplemented with high quality 3D graphics and terrain, rich with detail to forage in. After you're done exploring the planet, you can get into your space shuttle, and fly to other planets to explore. All the planets are uniquely handcrafted using Unity's terrain modelling tools.

The game is meant to be a way for players to experience the thrill of exploring the unknowns of the universe from the comfort and safety of their computer screens.

We used the Unity 3D game engine as the primary tool to create the game. We used a mixture of Unity's built in C# scripting engine as well as the Playmaker extension to write the logic for the game. We utilized Unity's powerful terrain modelling feature to create the surface of the planet. We used some free assets from the Unity asset store and some free to use textures from the internet for a lot of the game's 3D models.

Space Agency Data

We referenced Nasa's reserve of photographs of their space shuttles and planets, so we could make sure that whatever we utilized and made (namely the space shuttle and planet surfaces) was as close to real life as possible.

Hackathon Journey

This was our first project that we worked on together seriously. It was a great experience to work with another developer and see what's possible to create with the unique ideas and skills of both of us combined. The journey was stressful at times, but we could overcome all challenges in development with the help of the other.

References

We used the Unity game engine, Playmaker and free assets from the unity asset store.
