Desk Space

High-Level Project Summary

An Augmented Reality game allowing players to explore space, accumulate materials to upgrade their ships, and discover new planets. Think Pokémon GO But in SPACE!Our solution provides a new immersive way through with everyone can learn more about the world above us!

Detailed Project Description

The purpose of our project is to provide an interactive learning experience, and is aimed at students. Our project provides an interactive AR experience of space, that interacts with objects commonly found on their work desks, to provide a different mini environment based on the objects their camera interacts with. For example, on opening our app, the students get a moving AR experience of the solar system, where on interacting with the planets, more details are provided. Additionally, using target detection, on focusing the camera on a commonly found elements around their room, a currency note in this case a 3d planet, pops up. These planets are also interactable. Although our current project has limitations of functionality and design, the aim of the project is to provide a complete immersive experience of space, with the ability to experience different planet and galaxy environments, just from their rooms and using common elements lying around their rooms. The main tool used for this project was SparkAR, although we had other elements in the works in Unity using C# too. In future, we aim expand our project by combining the different elements developed on the other platforms too.

Hackathon Journey

It was quite challenging at first as none of our members knew how to develop games or had used AR technology before, however we were determined to try our best and have fun with it. We started off by doing some research not only about game development and possibilities, but also on the space above us, which we knew nothing about. After doing some necessary investigation, we got to work and our story grew from there. Thankfully, all our teammates were on the same boat when it came to the direction of the overall story of the game; a space exploration AR game that would expand as players hopped from planet to planet, learning from the comfort of their homes. We were inspired by Pokémon GO but had to find a way to incorporate our vision into today’s pandemic restrictions.

Most of our setbacks came from lack of expertise in the chosen field, but we powered through with the help of Google and YouTube tutorials. We ensured open communication between all team mates and were effective at delegating work. If any of us were facing any problems, we were open about them and helped one another in troubleshooting.
