Detailed Project Description
Games have an important place in the development and learning of children. According to Adıgüzel (2010), play is not just a means of entertainment for children, but an internal behavior that helps them learn and develop their creativity. Sometimes the process and sometimes the result are important in games, but the most important feature in games is that they are fun. According to Vygotsky, the game contributes to both the emotional and cognitive development of the child, while improving his sense of self-confidence and skills. According to Dewey, games provide a learning environment by doing and experiencing instead of memorizing information (Koçyiğit, Tuğluk and Kök 2007)
As it can be understood from the definitions made, the game is an indispensable tool for children and therefore teachers can also benefit from games in the teaching process. The games used in the teaching process are called educational games. Educational games are generally prepared for primary school students.
For this reason, in the game we prepared for space awareness, we used designs for children to understand the importance of space and energy.
Our game works on smartphones and tablets. We designed our game with Unity and C# language, designed for Android platforms as 2 middle school students in a 48-hour hackathon event. Our game's music have chat's friend. Chat's friend allowed. Our game consists of 2 parts. These 2 sections are designed to teach different planets. Each time the game starts, it contains different information about the planet, and the intro part appears. Then the player must advance the game by collecting energy balls by pressing the arrow keys. It should not be forgotten that the player should make the button passive after making the button active, considering that our game will be difficult and the information will be permanent.
Space Agency Data
We used NASA data to help find connections between the two topics (Planet Science and Education). It also helped us discover new things and read important topics.
We've seen important issues, and this has inspired us to do more research and find more connections between them. We've also used the platform to see past and future projects, and we've seen the research and solutions NASA wants to develop and use for Earth.
Hackathon Journey
It was very enjoyable for us to produce an educational game for students in a 48-hour event. Especially combining the game with education and sending it into space was really exciting. Thanks nasa for bringing our game to the game!
