Space Quest is an educational card game where players will represent Space Agencies to race and complete as many missions as possible. Players will have to manage funds to buy resources in order to complete their missions. This card game supports the direct and indirect learning about space from the perspective of the space architectures ,challenges of space exploration and brings space history to live. The card game is important to us because we believe it will help address the disparity in space science learning in underprivileged communities, creates an affinity and interest in STEAM as well as inspired Malaysian students to consider pursuing careers in this industry.

What exactly is our solution and how does it work?
In the Space Quest : The Card Game, 4-6 players will choose to represent any one of the space Agencies on earth. For each agency, there will be a superpower that the player can use only once in the game. Players will take turn playing action cards which may benefit themselves, foster collaboration takes risks or maybe even sabotage another .
Players will race to buy resource cards where students will be introduced to amazing space technologies and architectures we already have. These cards will then be used to redeem exploration cards by matching the resources it needs
How do you win ?
By collecting as many exploration cards as possible. Some exploration cards give a bonus exploration mark if it matches their space agency. If there is a draw, the player with the farthest astronomical unit (AU) wins!
What Benefit does it have ?
We hope that our solution will be able in a way address education inequity. Students that come from privilege backgrounds would naturally have more exposure, access and opportunities to explore STEAM education , more so in Space Science. As we are closely involved with underprivileged students, they are not interested in intangible theoretical laws and dry concepts in our Malaysian Syllabus. Hence, by using a card game , we can tap into their imagination and fun which creates a positive affinity to space science . We believe it can strengthened their knowledge directly and indirectly and be a trigger to loving STEAM industries. Our cards are peppered with space information and has a slight nod to popular sci-fi movies. Other than space science, students will learn soft skills in trading, collaboration and resource management.
Though our intention is to create a card game that interest our demographic, it is playable for all ages and backgrounds(and universe!) .
What do you hope to achieve?
What tools, coding languages, hardware, or software did you use to develop your project?
A huge influence in our design are from cards games such as the Monopoly deal, The Malaysian dream and Saboteur. We thank them for their inspiration !
We mainly have been reliant on Canva and Windows Movie Maker for our designs and videos. We hope one day to be able to get a graphic designer to partner us!

Open source data has inspired us tremendously as our project depend heavily on space agency's profile, achievements, technologies and missions in order to create a card game aligned with facts and syllabuses by our ministry of education.

Experience and Inspiration: Despite balancing with our core duties as teachers and "secondary parents to our students" in this unprecedented time, we are excited to join NASA Spaceapps challenge 2021 and to be part of global movement in STEAM education. STEAM literacy among students especially with the community that we work directly with, has always been our passion . Hence, we chose this challenge to come out with game card that can be used in teaching and supplement the syllabus. Astronomy, astrophysics, astronautic and space related interdisciplinary fields are vagues ideas to our students. Never in our years of teaching we have ever heard a kid's ambition to be an astronaut because it is never in their vocabulary and we are determined to change that. We know that they deserve better. Our underprivileged kids deserve to dream big and to proudly say "My ambition is to be an astronaut" without them being laughed at as if it were like being a superhero from Marvel Comic character. That is our aspiration and the reason that brought us together.
New knowledge learnt: Through out this journey we learn that there are always windows of opportunity. The Sky is never the limit . Each of us have learnt so much regarding the universe that we look upon and what we know now is only a micro fraction of what is out there. Reading up the contributions of the various Space agencies inspired that we should always look for new ideas and talent to help them unfold the secret of the universes. We have also learn that we have come a long way since Sputnik 1.0; we are continuously discovering new systems, exoplanets, galaxies , stars and moons. What if life was truly found to be existing in another planet one day?
Project ideation and development: We were inspired with tabletop and card games as they can be efficient tools for education. We used a similar framework and combination of elements as an approach method in developing our "Space quest: the card games". It is important for us to focus on the product appeal in order to retain our players (students) interest while playing the game thus ensuring learning sustainability. Here are the steps we took to come out with our final project.
Setback and challenges : There is no success without a blood, sweat and teas. That perfectly sum up our roller coaster 48 hours journey. From designing the card and brain storming ideas at the vaccination centre to juggling 2 or even 3 school meetings while completing our Space apps videos, we did it all and we did it with pride. We almost thought we couldn't submit our project due to our schedules. We played to our strengths and ensured open communication. Not to mentioned we also experienced a 3 hours blackout!
As with the current pandemic, one setback is the inability to do multiple game testing physically. We hope to improve our prototype in the future.

This project has been submitted for consideration during the Judging process.
Your challenge is to create a game that teaches players about space from the perspective of the architectures and challenges of exploration. The setting can be anything, from the past, to the future, with destinations either in our solar system, or beyond.
