High-Level Project Summary
Connecting citizen scientists from underserved communities with quality introductory learning resources on space exploration, the future of life, emerging technologies and sustainable development. Space XR Academy is a virtual collaboration platform that runs in a browser that activates spatial memory as you are transported to a series of 12 WebXR educational virtual 3D spaces. Additionally, collect sets of Augmented Reality learning objects.Featuring SpaceX (and Elon Musk related companies), NASA, CSA, JAXA, ESA, ROSCOSMOS, Virgin Galactic and; more to inspire people towards public-private partnerships and offer a game that reflects the principle that Space is for Everyone.

Detailed Project Description
- Space XR Academy is a WebXR browser base series of mini games. Each scene is a location on the Earth, the Moon, Mars, or beyond and has imagery and 3D models of past, current and aspirational missions.
- It helps to present a minimally biased perspective on a the complex brand ecosystem that accompanies many of the larger players in the New Space arena.
- It also includes an Augmented Reality component so participants can get up close with museum artifacts, rockets and other technology components.
- For the competition’s sake, the series is available on the Mozilla Hubs platform for demonstration. Alternative branded solutions are still being tested for a larger release. This competition permitted a much-needed organization of assets available and validation of the 3D assets and virtual worlds this project is comprised.
- Hopefully, it will be useful in building friendships and sharing knowledge in gentle ways that don't require strong English language comprehension.
Space Agency Data
The data used for this project was collected from creative commons assets on flickr, the NASA Image gallery and collections on Sketchfab. Some additional images and assets were purchased to supplement the collections. Research about past missions and anticipated future missions was conducted using NASAs various websites as well as Wikipedia. This in many ways is an art gallery and I am its virtual curator.
Hackathon Journey
This project began during COVID-19 restrictions. While living in my childhood hometown after a rather active Air Force Imagery career I realized and experience the challenges of disruptive technology. We fear what we don't understand. It has been my goal to create accessible content that is fun and that can translate across cultures and borders.
This challenge fits well with many 3D assets that had been in progress. The approach was to do an inventory of what was available and within the limitations of the platform the team experiment and extrapolate the spread of the content compared to the open endedness of the potential delivered project.
In attempting to make many stakeholders happy there are two parts of the app. One that runs completely in a browser and one that is in an app. Together they offer high levels of data security and international appeal for participants.
Overloaded with content and possibilities so with the time available this weekend focus was turned to debugging assets and organizing the public server. Am grateful for the opportunity to present my work for serious consideration.
Thank you!
