Project Team APEX - Space Quest: The Game

High-Level Project Summary

The team designed and developed a web-based game application that seeks to teach players about search exploration by testing or assessing their knowledge, and to motivate or encourage them to read more. This web-based app solves the challenge because it is geared towards to the development of computer-aided instruction (CAI) on space exploration. Likewise, the web app is very important in helping in the mission of orienting or educating people around the world about the space exploration.

Detailed Project Description

Team APEX designed and developed a web-based game application that allows users to register and login. Upon login, the user can select any mission under his/her specific level. His/her main goal is to reach Level 5 which is Space Quest Expert Explorer. In his/her way to reach the Level 5, he/she has to score 100 points to move to the next level. Thus, to reach Level 5, the user has to score 500 points. There will be questions which can be in the forms of fill-in-the-blank, true or false, and multiple choice questions. These questions are anchored to the topics that include concepts on space explorations, space flights, our vast universe, etc.

Further, the homepage displays the Top 5 players of the game.

These questions and missions are being maintained by the administrator. There will only be one website administrator. He/she can manage the records for mission and questions by adding new ones, update existing ones, delete records, and view list of records.

The said web-based game application can benefit all individuals from the children to adults. It targeted to educate them about space exploration through Q & A approach. We look forward that this web-based game application will expand into the online, interactive website in which people can learn more about the challenges and complexities of space exploration.

We used Web Expression as Editor in designing our webpage, php as our scripting language, mysql as our database, and wampserver for the web development and testing the designed, coded pages.

Space Agency Data

We used the resources in the challenge in writing the questions, either Fill-in-the-Blank, True or False, and Multiple Choice. For example, in the Basics of Space Flight, we extract meaningful, and practical information about the different planets in our universe.

Hackathon Journey

The NASA Space Apps experience was indeed an interesting, informative, and challenging activity for all of us. It was interesting because we were amazed to the vastness, and grandeur of our universe. Learning all about our planet, the universe, space exploration, etc. amazed all of us that leads to the appreciation of the power of Someone who is Divine and Powerful. It was informative because we came across concepts of science and technology, particularly on space exploration, aside from our field of Information Technology (IT). Likewise, it was challenging for us because we tried to brainstorm among ourselves, and discussed how we can apply our knowledge and skills in IT in coming up with sustainable solution to the chosen challenge based on our existing skills set.

What inspired the team to choose the challenge "Space Quest: Game" because we believe on the importance of education in encouraging people to participate and have interest in space exploration. We believe to the adage, "Knowledge is power".

Our approach is developing this project was based on what we have learned in our Software Engineering class. We started with planning and identifying the requirements, then we analyzed these requirements, and made some mock-up and database designs before we started the coding part. While coding, we tested our programs and ensure that we eliminated bugs or errors.

We resolved setbacks and challenges while working on our project by ensuring that we have open communication among the members. We created a whatsapp group that allowed each one to ask and answer questions or queries. Also, we cannot deny the support of our teachers who encouraged and motivated us to work with this project.

We would like to thank our department, the Department of Information of University of Technology and Applied Sciences - Shinas.
