Explore Together

High-Level Project Summary

Our challenge was to make a game to educate about space exploration and the importance of communication and teamwork based on the experiences of missions performed by professional space teams and their working methods. We solved it through a two-player exploration and rescue game, which consists of one player reading the telemetry data to give directions to his partner and guide him to the objective, rescue the stuck Rover with important samples to analyze. Why is it so important?Because we bring to the public important data about the planet; in this case Mars, and an overview of how missions are conducted and how teamwork is important for the success of a mission.

Detailed Project Description

The game consists of two crew members, who must locate and rescue from adverse situations on Mars, a Rover stuck with important samples to be analyzed.

They must make a previous analysis of the resources they have, how to deal with the situation and think of contingency plans in case of danger.

Each crew member has a specific role:

  • The base communicator:

Is presented with a screen with a series of data that he/she has to observe and communicate, through voice chat, to guide the other player. It has to be aware of the temperature, energy, percentage of cosmic radiation and location of its mission partner. Warn him in case of an approaching dust storm to take cover, etc. You can also refer to a codex with more information to keep in mind as the mission unfolds

  • The Space Ranger:

You must be attentive to the instructions you are given, to manage the resources you have and reach your objective. Only with the radio and the battery that has your transport, you must make your way to reach the Rover.

Through this game we tried to get the public closer to space missions, their procedures, how they operate, what data they handle and the importance of teamwork and good communication for the success of the mission.

The tools we used for the project were:

  • Clip studio paint
  • Tableta gráfica XP-Pen Artist 12
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • FlipaClip
  • Visual Studio Code
  • Adobe Premiere
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Sublime text editor
  • Visual Studio
  • OBS

The programming language was Javascript

Space Agency Data

We used general data about mars environment (dust storms, etc) and mars rovers in order to simulate those conditions to provide players the feeling of work in exploration.

Hackathon Journey

Our experience with this hackathon was very good, we were able to learn more about basic gaming concepts and how to entertain while using serious topics to educate. We also got closer to a more complex programming language and how to try to integrate everything we wanted to show.

We helped ourselves a lot with exchanges of opinions and references we found on the web or data from similar games we already knew, to communicate with each other how we wanted the game to look and play.
