Bacteria is our savior

High-Level Project Summary

We came up with a new idea that can be considered a seed to solutions for global warming and consequently climate change. Our idea consist of a super ability that if Earth had it, it would save its environment and its inhabitants. Flying bacteria is that super ability.Bacteria like escherichia coli and anammox feeds on toxic and greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides) so with a big and ever replicating population of bacteria a significant amount of these gases will be absorbed and transformed into less harmful chemicals.

Detailed Project Description

We hope that our idea may become technically possible to apply in the near future so it can help fight global warming and have a better world.

Flying Bacteria

Bacteria like methanotrophs consumes methane as their source of carbon and unlock the energy of oxygen, nitrate, sulfate, or other oxidized species.

Escherichia coli consumes CO2 as food instead of sugar or other organic molecules and that is following this reaction:

CO2 ---> CO + O it need energy (heat).

Another bacteria that will help ridding off toxic and greenhouse gas is Anammox.

It converts nitrogen oxide(NO) which is toxic into dinitrogen gas(N2) which is safe.

This bacteria is founded all over the planet and plays an important role in the nitrogen cycle, and most importantly ammonium oxidation:

 NH 4 + + NO 2 − ---> N 2 + 2 H 2 O

Now, if these bacteria had the ability to fly for long distances and form its colonies high up in the atmosphere, it would feed on the greenhouse gases and thanks to its exponential growth it will form an ever growing sink to these gases and do the job in relatively short time.

This idea was put forward and explained with more context in our project demo, the slides deck(using Powerpoint ) and in our final project a three minutes video (using canva.com and Adobe Audition).

Space Agency Data

Water cycle:

Bacteria:

The data of water cycle was very inspirational for our team and it's from there that we began brainstorming ideas.

Until one idea caught our attention and it's how powerful and full of potential bacteria are.

Hackathon Journey

  • Our journey was in no way easy but it was fun and a big opportunity to learn and strengthen new skills.
  • We learned a lot about the cycles in our planet and the abilities that Earth have.
  • We were inspired by the great range of creativity available in this challenge and we were also motivated by the pressing issues of environmental crisis and their great dangers on young generations in the future.
  • Because of the diversity of disciplines of our members, we were able to engage in lot of different ideas around the problem of the challenge which of course helped a lot in solving setbacks and finding common ground.
  • Finally, we would like to thank the local lead and the volunteers for their endless support. We are also thankful to NASA for their open source and free to access data.
