OCEANAUT

High-Level Project Summary

Ocean Astronaut (Oceanaut) will reduce the level of acidification in oceans. It will take water in, filter right amount of CO2 and separate it to its components O2 and Carbon with the help of machine learning algorithms. It will use Carbon to produce its own energy so it will be autonomous. It will release oxygen into the water. It will adjust the amount of CO2 that it takes in and oxygen that it releases. It will use machine learning to optimize itself according to data it collects. It will convey all the data it stores to NASA. Oceanaut is vital to make the earth a possible place to live for all the living beings.

Detailed Project Description

We came up with an idea of "Ocean Astronaut" to solve the Ocean Acidification problem. Our hero Oceanaut is an aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a mechanic astronaut and the lower body of a fish. It is a hibrit creature, both organic and inorganic. It firstly measures the levels of pH, CO2 and other elements in oceans. According to the data it collects and with the rich and unique machine learning algorithms, it takes water in. It filters the right amount of CO2 from the water. Then, it separates CO2 into its components: O2 and C. It releases O2 into the water and uses carbon for producing clean energy. It produces the energy needed to work by itself with Carbon so it is autonomous. It continuously sends all the data it collects to NASA.

Secondly, it releases signals to communicate with marine creatures to keep them away from the regions with low pH level in an ocean.

Oceanaut decreases the acidification level in oceans. Why is this important because oceans feed living beings, regulates the climate and generate the oxygen we breathe in. It is the home to countless creatures. When the balance in oceans get corrupted, the balance of earth gets destroyed. Oceans have enourmous effect on the earth. With solving the greatest problems of oceans, ocean acidification, we hope to survive the earth from the expected end.

Space Agency Data

1) https://climate.nasa.gov/

The data we got from climate.nasa showed us that, right now the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is at its highest level since the last 650 thousand years with 416 ppm.

2)https://climatekids.nasa.gov/acid-ocean/

The website “Climatekids” informed us about the reasons and consequences of ocean acidification.

3) https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/blogs/earthmatters/category/climate/

According to one of the articles in the website earthobservatory.nasa, the level of CO2 differs from region ro region. So, it helped us to proritize oceans and water resources according to their CO2 levels.

Hackathon Journey

It is all of us’s first NASA’s space app challenge journey. When the group came together, the first thing we decided to do was searching the global problems detailly. Because only by knowing a problem detailly, one can come up with the best solution for it. While analyzing global issues, we came across a qoute: “Without taking global precautions for the problems in oceans, it is not possible to deal with the climate change.” . When we read this qoute, we were really surprised due to our lack of knowledge about the important role of oceans in the earth and its link to the climate change. So, we decided to focus on “Ocean Acidification” problem. However, the question was how to convince or take help of the greatest space agency for the problems of oceans. That was the moment of enlighment. We thought: Why wouldn’t NASA send astronouts to oceans which are the lungs of our planet. We, the 4 scientists of future, created OCEAN+ASTRONOUT= OCEANAUT for the expected end of the Earth and dedicate it to NASA. We thank everyone who gave us a chance to make our voice heard with this hackathon.
