Marina the Ocean Ballerina

High-Level Project Summary

Marina the Ocean Ballerina is a super hero that personifies Earth's ocean currents. She has a special superpower to sweep up all the microplastics found in the oceans and filter excessive carbon dioxide. Marina can create vorteces with her hands which swirl on the ocean surface collecting all the microplastics. Her gown has a special filter which absorbs the excessive carbon dioxide that makes ocean water too acid. Marina represents an ability that the Earth lacks, but would be extremely important to save the ocean environment.

Detailed Project Description

Marina the Ocean Ballerina is a super hero that personifies Earth's ocean currents. She has a special superpower to sweep up all the microplastics found in the oceans and filter excessive carbon dioxide. Marina can create vorteces with her hands which swirl on the ocean surface collecting all the microplastics. These vorteces are like boomerangs that return back to Marina depositing the litter in her gown which neutralizes them. Marina's gown resembles the ocean's waves and it has a special filter which absorbs the carbon dioxide and brings the water's PH level back to normal.

My drawing was handmade starting from a video tutorial on how to draw a ballerina. Then I added specific details to her gown so she would resemble the ocean currents.

Marina should raise awareness in young people on the problem of ocean pollution, teaching them that we all have to be superheroes to help save the marine environment. It could even be turned into a cartoon or video game in which Marina gives hints on how to help the ocean environment.

Space Agency Data

The website Climate Kids gave me some info about ocean acidification which is a form of pollution.

I found an image of a vortex and it inspired me for my hero's superpower. Infact Marina the Ocean Ballerina shoots vorteces from her hands, and these collect all the microplastics and then come back as a boomerang.

Hackathon Journey

I chose the SuperpowEARTH challenge because it is one of the challenges dedicated to younger people. Iimmediately liked the idea to create a superhero, but at the beginning I was stuck on the drawing. Then I focused on Earth's abilities and while researching ocean currents, I had the idea to personify them as a ballerina, because her movements resemble ocean waves. This is how Marina the Ocean Ballerina was born. I had to create a superpower, and to do so I studied some of the ocean's problems. I found out about microplastics and acidification which are killing marine life. How could my superhero help? By using her special superpowers: vorteces and filtering gown.

I would like to thank my mother who told me about the Space Apps Challenge and pushed me to participate.
