High-Level Project Summary
Mars Voyagers is a single player, 2D video game that involves space exploration and problem solving through easy missions that allow the user to have a sneak peak of what it is to be inside a spacecraft with a set course to Mars. The challenges in matter involve the user to take action based on what is best for the astronaut on board. Our main goal is to entertain, inspire and educate the audience through the journey of being an astronaut in outer space. This video game is a great tool for aspiring astronauts and young minds that would like to pursue a career related to space exploration, engineering or any bioscience that could be applied in this type of situation.

Detailed Project Description
Our game Mars Voyagers involves the player inside a spacecraft whose final destination is Mars. Inside the spacecraft you can move around as the astronaut, explore the different rooms and take a look at the different missions. Whenever you reach a certain room, a challenge may appear and it will show a situation that could occur in outer space. Since this is a demo, we’ve not yet implemented the different solutions the player could take. However, the situations presented will involve the player in an almost realistic problem during a trip through space. The ideas for the challenge were based on the movie The Martian and Interstellar in which the astronauts had system issues or health issues and had to use their problem solving to address the situation.
With our videogame, the young audience can enjoy learning about space and the different problems that astronauts may have to overcome in outer space. Also, we hope this can inspire the young minds to pursue a career related to this area, this is created through interesting challenges and missions that the player will have to think, analyze and solve in a short amount of time.
Regarding the development of the project, as a team we created the 2D video game using Unity Version: 2020.3.19f1 (LTS) and for coding language we used C#. We also used assets from the Unity Asset Store, our main character was created by Copy Spright.
Space Agency Data
We used the explanation video as a main resource, with this tool we were able to think and develop an interesting and enjoyable game. This was also helpful for use in order to remind us what was the challenge about and how can we approach it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlHD5HfFJlE&list=PL37Yhb2zout05pUjr7OoRFpTNroq_wd9f&index=2
Also, we used this resource to get a wider perspective of the possible effects for a mammal in a space environment, such as secondary effects associated with radiation, isolation, distance from Earth, gravity fields, and hostile environments. https://www.nasa.gov/hrp/bodyinspace
For the pitch we used the guide of 30 seconds of glory. This resource helped us to make a decision as a team in order to see which option (either video or presentation) was more viable for us. https://sa-2019.s3.amazonaws.com/media/documents/Space_Apps_2021_Project_Demo_Guide.pdf
Hackathon Journey
As a team, this was an amazing opportunity and experience. We were able to exploit our creativity and skills in such a short amount of time that we're pleased with the results we came up with. We also encountered some challenges throughout the weekend that we were able to overcome through good communication and collaboration within the team.
Although the amount of work was huge, we were able to create a video game that we're proud of and that also allowed us to grow as good game designers and developers.
Finally, as college students, this weekend was exhausting but also one of the best weekends of our career. We had never participated in a hackathon but we are looking forward for a future opportunity.
