IKIGAI - explore outer space with fascination

High-Level Project Summary

Games influence the further positive perceptions of a person in a certain sphere and profession (survey described in Detailed PD). Unfortunately, in most games, space acts as a background, its features are not taken into account. We developed the game IKIGAI, where the levels, challenges that the astronaut faces are based on the laws of physics, real events. We want children from a young age to have knowledge about space, have an idea that this isn't the same as flying an airplane. In each level of our game, the character faces a certain problem, info is given about what the player needs to do and after passing the level, a detailed answer to the question "Why is this so?" is explained.

Detailed Project Description

Information about survey from the "High-Level Project Summary":

According to a social survey that our team conducted among young people aged 20-35, 70% of the 1,240 respondents (869 people) have basic knowledge and ideas about the professions that games were associated with from their past. 36.45% (452 people) have a profession related to their favorite games from the past. This suggests that games influence the further positive perceptions of a person in a certain sphere and profession.

Game concept:

Our game consists of levels, each of them touches on a specific problem. The plot of the game develops with each level. Accordingly, the order and the period of occurrence of the problem can be determined by the levels. For example, level 1 "Before the flight" is about the problem of the risk of losing consciousness due to high speed and supergravity.

Advantages and innovativeness:

  • The novelty of the concept and plot of the game
  • Space exploration in an interactive form
  • The collected compressed large information relates to one topic
  • Players can pass levels repeatedly, and use the game as a class material to give students hands-on experience with the topic

Our goals:

  • To show the space exploration difficulties and explain the difference with the Earth: to answer the question "Why is traveling by a plane and a rocket different?"
  • To show space and space related professions from all sides
  • Psychologically prepare children for the professional field from an early age, reduce the risk of an emergency
  • Spread awareness of the profession and contribute to the growth of science among the new generation

Resources used (not material!):

  • Godot Engine (game engine)
  • Laigter (tool)
  • Aseprite (pixel-art tool)
  • GD Script (coding language)
  • Photoshop
  • Pixel Studio (for pixel drawings)

Space Agency Data

Used resourses (materials, informations):

We used resources to identify the problems faced by astronauts and also found answers, solutions to them.

Our game (demo version) so far consists of two levels, respectively, two problems are affected. In the future, we will develop our game, make more levels, respectively, address other problems such as muscle and bone mass loss, insomnia, illness and depression.

We are going to use the following resources for them:

Hackathon Journey

A graphic designer who developed UI/UX design; a programmer who wrote site codes; a biologist who studied the influence of plants on psychology; a data analyst who collected material for social projects; a game developer with experience in action games. Despite our versatility, we are united by one thing - the desire to explain to the younger the rules of the cosmos in simple words.

One day, at a meeting of the mentor school club, a boy from the seventh grade asked to provide materials for space exploration. Even if we have guys in our team who are engaged in astronomy Olympiads, we could not answer this, because everything was described in complex language. Then we realized that there are not enough games in the world that explain the influence of space on the mental and physical health of a person.

During the hackathon, each member of our team taught new skills to another participant. As a result: the number of analysts became - 5, programmers - 4, web designers - 3.

Of course, even with great desire, every hour, we wanted to say "Oh, that's it, I'm leaving the team!", but other participants from our team comforted that member, and we fully developed the project! We shared responsibilities, and when one of us was stuck, we found other ways to achieve results together. Each of us is grateful for each other: one was proofreading the script, another was teaching design skills, and another team member helped creating background music.
