Mission Antares

High-Level Project Summary

The project we developed is a board game. We believe that a board game is the best way to teach kids about risks in space travel. The game itself teaches its players the basics of Space Travel risks without using any NASA Jargon. The major importance of the game is that this is sure to be approved and encouraged by schools and parents too.

Detailed Project Description

What exactly does it do?

The game uses real-like events to incorporate the learning part into the interactive game. During the game, all spaces represent an event or an Astronomical event or a Health issue. So, every time a player moves forward, he/she learns something new.

How does it work?

To play the game, all you need is a dice and some friends. The way of functioning is similar to any "Dice and Board" game: You roll the dice, then move your piece forward according to the number you get.

What benefits does it have?

The major benefit is that this will be a great way to teach its players the basics of Risks in Space Travel in a very simple manner. This is because the player is directly engaging with the explanations of the risks as he/she progresses through the game. Apart from the targeted benefit, this will also inculcate many soft skills of great value.

The Game & Gameplay

At the moment, the game is only available as a softcopy. The game board measures 34" x 22". You will need dice to play the game (a six-sided dice is recommended). We recommend that each game have four players. You can, however, always play with your best friend or with all of your relatives.

Specific instructions are written on some of the spaces. However, for Astronomical Event spaces and Health Issues, you must follow the instructions based on the number you receive from the dice (the number is obtained by rolling the dice again after landing in such a space). Asteroid Dodge is a minigame in the game. To play asteroid dodge, you must roll a 2 or a 5.

If you "die", you have to start the Main Game from the beginning. How can you die? You may land on an asteroid during the Asteroid Dodge game or get your ship ripped apart.

Space Agency Data

This video helped us understand the challenge itself and guided us towards choosing our aim

This article inspired us to choose this challenge as it made us understood the risks of Space Travel and their complexity.

Our project was largely based on this article.

Hackathon Journey

This 35-hour journey was a vivid collection of various types of experiences. There were even more during the planning period. We had many positive experiences, such as friendship, confidence, and happiness, as well as some negative ones, such as anger, fear, and regret. Then there were some difficulties; we simply did not have enough time to devote to it due to our hectic schedules. Nonetheless, we believe we have performed admirably. Our primary motivation for participating was that we initially mistook it for a coding program. Again, as we observed more closely, we realized it had far more value and significance than we had previously imagined. We chose the specific challenge we chose because we felt the absence of a suitable solution Furthermore, we would like to thank NASA, as well as all of the other partnering Space Agencies from around the world, for providing us with this opportunity.
