High-Level Project Summary

This project started with the idea of creating a space online where non-scientists could reach for information about active probes orbiting the Sun. For this reason, we developed a visualization tool to improve public knowledge of the many spacecraft exploring the Sun. The importance of this project is in the simplicity of the access to the information and the possibility to deepen the level thanks to the connection to the official websites of the space missions.

Detailed Project Description

The project is not only a visual tool, as already mentioned, but was planned to be easily accessible also to people who are visually impaired. For this reason, we added the possibility to “hear” the written text through free access software. A few members of the team also provided some simulations that couldn’t be finished because of the time limit but that enrich the experience of the viewer.

Space Agency Data

The data used in this project was taken from NASA and ESA. All pieces of information taken from a website are linked and other information was written down from our own experience of studying the subject as physics students. The fact that NASA has so much information on their website helped us decide on what to focus on and what to leave for the viewer.

Hackathon Journey

The experience has been enriching on every level: personal, academic, and emotional. Being part of a worldwide challenge connected us with many other scientists around the globe and allowed us to see many different approaches to the same problem. Also within the team, we continuously exchanged ideas, opinions, and methods, so that everyone ended up learning something by the end of the 48 hrs. We had a problem with one simulation that would have required a longer period for us to solve the numerical integral, but still, we managed to finish part of it. The challenge was chosen because of a communal interest in the topic and it was amazing to see many different abilities -painting, coding, writing- come together for this communal effort.
