Curios Rover

High-Level Project Summary

After NASA announced its Artemis 3 flight, those interested in space sciences became eager for this flight, and what distinguishes this trip is that it intends to remain astronauts on the surface of the moon for about a week to collect samples and study the environment, the astronauts will need many tools that will be difficult to carry, so we designed this rover To carry tools and help collect samples, whether on the surface of the moon using tools such as (shovel or pincers) or to a greater depth using tools such as (drill and core tube). The rover will follow the astronaut anywhere he goes, which is why we chose this name for it, and it can also be controlled remotely.

Detailed Project Description

Our problem is that astronauts are facing a problem with handling and managing their tools and also they can’t move it for a long-distance so our team decided to solve this problem by devolving a radio-controlled rover that can be used easily by the astronauts to help him using his tools easily. Our robot's Main aim is to follow the astronaut carrying the toolbox instead of the astronaut to make him move more freely. To make our robot more advanced and support multi-tasking we are going to add a robot arm with extended tools modules to do various missions like taking samples .

Our Curious Rover consists of three main parts :

1-        Body & Control

2-        Toolbox & Sample box

3-        Arm

_____________________________

1-        Body & Control

We have developed Curious Body to be able to adapt with different surface also we have designed a modified wheels in a way which we can disassemble and replace.
Our Rover is also provided with a control unit which is controlled by orders the astronauts send and responsible for controlling every part of the robot

2-        Toolbox & Sample box

we have created a toolbox in the shape of a cylinder and divided it into partitions to save more space and help the robot recognize each tool to pick it up for the astronaut. also, we have allocated a sample box to store any samples to be analyzed.

3-        Arm

The arm takes samples and stores them in the sample box, It is designed to accept more than one tool and perform more than one function, such as:
1) Tongs
2) Gripper
3) scoop
4) Rake
5) Drill

Space Agency Data

We had used the APOLLO-16 and APOLLO-17 press kits to learn about the tools used by astronauts in the past and the stages of development of tools:

Hackathon Journey

NASA Space Apps's experience was inspiring for us. Our team got to know each other and we got along very well and we shared the same interests as a team. We also learned to search for information on our own and to search for sources.

It was a great experience that I want to repeat.
