paper SUMO wrestling in SPACE

High-Level Project Summary

One of the challenges of interstellar travel is the lack of recreational activities. To address this issue, we have created a space paper sumo game based on the ancient Japanese sport of sumo.

Detailed Project Description

Here are some of the features and innovations.

In general, paper sumo is possible because of gravity. But how can it be done in a weightless world?

I decided to use the contraction force of rubber bands to solve this problem.

The idea was to use the rubber bands in a space ship, without using metal or magnets, and to create an analogue atmosphere in a digital world.

One of the features of this project is that the game is decided by the way the rubber is stretched when it is set up.

The fact that it is difficult to predict the outcome is one of the most interesting features of the paper sumo in this space.

Here are a few more ideas.

Each wrestler uses two rubber bands.

These rubber bands have several functions.

The first rubber band acts as a vector in the direction of the ring.

The second rubber band acts as a vector between the forward direction and the direction of the ring, and as a vector between the forward direction and the direction of the ring using twisting.

The torsional vector is only used in the first encounter.

There is also another vector, the push-up vector, which causes the air to blow out of the ring.

In total, there are five forces at work.

The structure looks like this.

The structure is based on Caddo's drawings.

Astronaut Karen Nyberg Sews Aboard Station | NASA

Expedition 36 Flight Engineer Karen Nyberg uses some of her off-duty time on the International Space Station for sewing -- one of her many hobbies.

We thought with reference to this HP.

We thought of entertainment in outer space.

Hackathon Journey

Team leader Ito participated in the hackathon last year and learned a lot from his defeat there.

He considered the importance of communicating with people in a corona-stricken environment.
