WEBB ORIGAMI DESIGN CHALLENGE

High-Level Project Summary

We developed a model of the James Webb telescope with a folding main mirror made of paper, glue and paint. The project was created to attract the attention of children to the future grandiose launch of the telescope, which can see galaxies distant from us at a giant distance of 13.8 billion light years.“James Webb” is an international project led by NASA, ESA and CSA.Once commissioned, scientists from all over the world will be able to use the telescope to study galaxies, stars, planetary systems and the origin of life.

Detailed Project Description

Our 3-d model is made of paper, glue and paint to add realism and beauty. It is partially mobile - it can fold and unfold mirror elements. Has almost all the main parts of the telescope. With more time available, we would like all the details to be dynamic.

Space Agency Data

When creating the project, data from NASA helped us a lot, so they helped us to navigate the telescope layout, purpose, see the stages of its placement in space, how and in what sequence its transformation occurs.

Hackathon Journey

We are a team that consists of members of the same family. It was an unforgettable experience for us: we rallied and worked hand by hand for two days in a row, absorbed in the excitement of the hackathon. We learned about the principle of operation of telescopes and the James Webb telescope as well. Mom and Dad were responsible for modeling, daughter for design, painting and video assembly, and son helped to translate the text into English and was a speaker. We would like to thank NASA for such a wonderful challenge, American Space Almaty and the US Consulate General in Kazakhstan for their help in organizing this event.
