DIY JWST

High-Level Project Summary

We have made an origami version of the James Webb Space Telescope and created instructions so anyone of school age and above can create their own model and learn about the amazing features of the JWST. We've solved the challenge by making an origami artwork of the James Webb Space Telescope that highlights some of its technological and design features. We wanted to make it simple enough for kids and families to make at home so everyone can learn about its cool features.

Detailed Project Description

Our project solved the challenge by creating an origami artwork of the James Webb Space Telescope, but also provides instructions for others to make their own models at home to help them learn about its amazing technological and design features. We purposely kept our origami version simplified so that school-aged children could make it on their own, or families can make it together. We are both 9 years old, so we know primary/elementary students can do this!

To create your James Webb Space Telescope at home, you will need paper, scissors and tape.

Space Agency Data

We used images found on the NASA JWST page to help inspire our design. https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2020/james-webb-space-telescope-video-and-image-gallery

We also used an annotated image credited to NASA from a BBC article to help inspire our design and highlight some of the telescope's features. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-58498676

Our other background research came from the resources listed on the hackathon challenge description:

Hackathon Journey

We thought this project was really fun.

We chose it because we enjoy making origami together at school, and thought we could do a good job making this telescope.

We found making the outline of the primary mirror really challenging, but decided to sacrifice accuracy for the ability of anyone to make it with the least amount of frustration.

We learned that you can make just about anything out of paper (sort of!)

We would like to thank Jasper's mum for helping with the computery stuff.
