Light-curvers

High-Level Project Summary

We tried to explore how the shape of various asteroids affected its light curve. We learnt what a light curve was and visualized the light curves of various asteroids which we found in our project resources.

Detailed Project Description

In this project we developed a python tool which allowed us to take pictures/screenshots of the asteroid in blender at equal intervals in degrees. The rgb values were extracted from the images to output the overall brightness of the image. this brightness was then plotted alongside its corresponding angles. This was our final light curve which we added to a simplistic website which we coded with html. this entire code was uploaded to github whose link was shared as the link of the final project. This link gives access to all the light curves, 3d models and a video which displays the shadows and highlighted areas of the model when light from the sun was reflected off it.

Space Agency Data

we used data from the nasa database provided as well as the following website - https://3d-asteroids.space/asteroids/

the following were the asteroids which were used in our proof off concept project -

1) Mathilde Stooke

2) Toutatis

3) Mithra

4) YORP

5) Eros Gaskell

6) 1996 HW1

7) Arrokoth Stern

Hackathon Journey

we faced quite a lot of challenges in our way in this hackathon journey since it was the first hackathon journey which we ever attempted. this included team building problems which included getting our teammates to work and also technical difficulties like finding a platform to host our html. Also problem solving issues like finding a fast efficient way to take renderings of the asteroid at a particular angle
